After we address the o line they should get the best player available. If it happens to be a QB, go for it. Always a good idea to draft QBs in mid rounds.

No position is more important than the guy who throws the ball. We can surround alex smith with all probowlers and I am confident that he will still fail... He may show glimpse of hope, but in the end, he will fail.

Draft a QB in 2010!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did San Diego pass on Philip Rivers because Ryan Leaf sucked? or
Did ATL pass on Matt Ryan because Mike Vick decided to kill dogs and play avg football prior?
Did Detroit pass on Stafford because Joey Harrington was a bust?
Did Baltimore pass on Flacco because Boller sucked?
Did Cincy pass on Palmer because Akili Smith sucked?

Not necessarily about possible failure with a first round pick, more about the pressing need at OL, safety, and a PR/KR.

Did the Browns pass on Brady Quinn because Tim Couch Sucked?
Did the Bills pass on Trent Edwards because JP Losman sucked?
Did the Redskins pass on Jason Campbell because Patrick Ramsey sucked?
Did the Bears pass on Rex Grossman because Cade McNown sucked?
Did the 49ers pass on Alex Smith because Jim Druckenmiller sucked?
Did the Vikings pass on Tavarias Jackson because Daunte Culpepper got hurt and declined?

Maybe they should have. It goes both ways...

Exactly!!!! Its called filling the more pressing needs. Not sure why others don't get it.

I am not positive but would guess that most of those choices were made by new GM's. Scot waited for his guy to get healthy and I doubt he spends a high pick on a QB since that would mean he was wrong on AS.

Because some deluded people on this site think that they know more about running a football team than the professionals. That or they have personal agendas which have very little to do with the teams welfare, just personal dislike for a player on the roster.
Team management's thinking is that Alex will continue to progress with a full off-season as the starter. That's fair...in part because he'll be in the 2nd year of his contract. He'll either make it or not...if not, I'd look for them to groom Nate Davis. He's got a great arm, good size & mobility and seems more pro-ready than Alex was. So, QB's not really a big need at this point.

The biggest thing the Niners can do to improve their weak offense is to beef up the OL. I doubt they'll re-sign Baas, so drafting a top OG is a need...so is RT. Jury's still out to some extent on Rachal, too. All the good teams have excellent OL's...ours needs to be better so the offense can really progress.

Another area needing dramatic improvement is the RB corps. There's just not much viable talent behind Gore. We need a big RB...and there are some real dandies this year. We also need more speed in the backfield, so we can bring more skill sets to the offense. When's the last time we ran some good screens or power sweeps? It's been awhile.

Bottom line is making a change at QB isn't the answer...at least not now. The key to Alex's success is to improve the support around him. We've got a good receiving corps now...yes, they need to hang onto the ball better, but the talent's there. It's the OL and RB corps that need to improve...if they do that, we'll see a much better and more consistent offense next season.

im not ready to give up on rachal yet, dude was raw coming out as a jr and with great coaching dude can become a mainstay on our oline. how he was solid his rookie yr and blows now has to do with coaching i believe, i just want forester the f**k out. all our olinemen can use better coaching.

They also need better strength coaching, they seem to get blown back into the backfield too often.
Yeah, it seems we haven't had a top OL coach for awhile...Warhop had his issues and it seems Foerster's not getting much better results. Part of the problem could also be the lack of identity/direction...what kind of team are we trying to be? It's not smash-mouth as Singletary wanted, or thought he wanted...given our receiving corp's improved so much, it makes sense to have OL who're adept at both pass protection and run blocking, but also be athletic/mobile enough to lead power sweeps and screens. Because we don't really have that OL skillset, it's a big reason Raye's somewhat handicapped in his play calling.

If a true franchise type of QB is available, you don't pass him up. Even if Alex Smith pans out to be the franchise, then we can still trade either one for a 1st rounder.

You don't pass up any franchise type of player at any position that makes that much of an impact.

This is a valid point expecially after watching the Brees situation pan out in SD worst case scenario you pick the better of 2 good QB's.
