Yah I agree with you on that. I think the third down play should have been a run or screen pass. If anything at least make them use there time outs.

Sometimes, a QB begins to take control, calms down and understands the time and situation. Alex didn't show this but the fact that he showed so much more in other parts of the game is important. In the second half, we had terrible Field Position where Jimmy Raye went into Turtle mode due to being backed in our own Endzone.

He's 26, but his knees aren't. Remember, he blew both of them out in college. Those are going to cut his career short.

Smith is progressing very well. In a spread or at least a 3 wide option he has the potential to put up elite QB numbers. That game should have been a 400 yard game with 4 TD's instead of a 300 yarder with 2 TD's. Does He have come from behind ability? I think thus far its 50/50. Can he manage game winning drives? also i think is 50/50. But as long as VD drops 2 or 3 a game as well as others this offense is going to keep shooting itself in the foot.

Lets look at the big picture, Alex came in 7 weeks ago after not seeing a snap in almost 2 season worth of play, in my mind he is still green. We took are entire game plan from preseason through week 6 and trashed it, thus drastically changing what we do on offense meaning what we are doing now still maybe a learning process for some of the players. Crabtree is a rookie and is going to make mistakes. Coach Sing is a rookie coach and is going to make mistakes. I believe coach ray is calling an offense he isn't used to calling and will make mistakes. All this being said we still have 4 games left to see what we got and still have 2 first rounders next year. There is more upside to this team than down and Alex is one of the big reasons for that.

Agreed.
When they start running this offense from the start of training camp next year and hopefully OL upgrades they will be much better than they are right now.

Alex Smith's progress is blessing in disguise this season.

Yeah like a lot of journalists/experts have been saying...this losing season while it still sucks...is infinitely better because we finally have an answer @ QB.

Think about it:

Going into:

2005 - Tim Rattay or Alex Smith. Rattay gets the boot, and Alex comes in @ 21 and struggles big time. We had no talent.

2006 - Alex was the starter. Took every snap and did well enough to pretty much warrant him the starter next season.

2007 - Smith was good in pre season and goes 2-1 in the regular season only to go down with a Grade III separation. Chaos ensues.

2008 - 2 way competition turns into three way "competition" turns into complete and utter disaster. Smith on IR and seems like he's pretty much done in the SF (maybe NFL), and a 9 year journey man loser becomes our savior. Hill comes in during the last portion of the season and plays well enough to (basically) be the starter going into this season.

2009 - Hill maintains during the off season and edges out Alex Smith to keep the starting job. Smith does really well but doesnt SHOW the intangibles ENOUGH to beat out Hill. Hill does fairly well during the season, only to hit a massive WALL during the ATL and HOU game(s). Enter Alex: rest is history in the making.

2010 - ???? We have unquestioned starter going into the season no ifs ands or buts. We have a solidified WR corps, RB, NEW O-line, pass rusher, and an IDENTITY on BOTH sides of the ball for the FIRST time in 8 years. ????


So while it sucks we didnt make the playoffs...I'm not as bummed as normal. There actually is light at the end of this tunnel it seems. We've always been generally excited for the next season....but there was always some level of uncertainty to it all. Now..for the first time since 2001-2002...I feel like good things WILL come instead of.."man I hope something good happens."

Who knows whats gonna happen with the QB situation next year, lets hope Alex can show he is the real deal. Gotta impress these last 4 weeks

At the time, I thought we should have taken our shot in OT. It was 50 50 we were going to get the ball. We were the ones dominating the game at the end. We were only asking for a game winning drive from the 11 with 50 seconds left. It's moments like this that have me questioning Sing's feel for the game. We were kicking some serious ass in the beginning until we threw all our momentum away with the statue of liberty punt return. We battled bad field position the rest of the game and regained our edge and then threw it away at the end. Seattle punted every possession except Gore's gift since mid second quarter. I have no doubt that we would have won the game in OT.

Well, from the quotes by Smith, he rushed and misread the pass to Crabs in the Endzone and his last play of the game.

Smith anticipated being sacked on the misfire to Crabs as Smith said he didn't want to get sacked because they had FG range. Well, he got good blocking and should have waited and if he did get sacked, we still would have been in range, easily.

The last pass, Smith and the OC anticipated zone but he also saw the blitz coming yet he still went with, like a robot, the play as it was originally planned. On top of that, Gore slipped right infront of him to make the block on the blitzer. Smith needs to see this in his peripheral. To add, Smith missed Davis who had his man beat by a couple of steps.


So far, Smith has tightened up but it still doesn't mean his guys should have dropped the balls when Smith delivered. However, Crabs didn't drop the ball, Smith threw an uncatchable throw because, from his mouth, he rushed it.
