I don't agree with this at all... I think he did fine but needs to improve... he is playing like how he played before getting injured....which isn't necessary a good thing....

alot on here wanted to blame that INT on Crabtree but that was not the case.... Alex threw it high and away......Alex can get away with this as far as passes to the side line....but when throwing it in the middle of the field he needs to either be accurate or miss low....

and there was another pass that was an INT that was dropped by the cb....

so besides these passes...... Isaac Bruce let him down, dropped very easy catchable passes....and of course, imo, Raye let him down by not letting him get into rythem....this is one thing have been complaining for most of the season with Hill back there.....the playcalling doesn't really give our QB chances to get into rythem.... I believe that WildCat on 2nd down was a wasted play....and that 2nd down inside hand off to Norris of all people on 2nd and 10 WTF???

but back to Alex... this is one thing that drives me crazy...which I don't understand... he made some PERFECT throws...hooked up well with Crabtree for some first down.....but after hitting perfect passes....he can be TOTALLY off...and he does this in the middle of the field..the worst place to do so.

and of course those delay of game penalties are killing us....he should have been paying attention or if the playcall came in late he should have called time out... it went from being 3rd 7 to 3rd 11 on that crucial drive......

but yeah the Playcalling is what frustrates me...the formations we use....like someone else has mentioned, even when we come out in Shogun, Gore was still able to get some good yardage on a play.....we have to spread the defense out...and let Alex look at everything and decide early what he needs to do....when everyone is bunched in together and our Oline has let our QBs down on simple blocking assignments it makes a QB's job that much harder to try and read what a defense is going to do.......for as much as we run it.... I don't remember seeing one playaction rollout...or bootleg... I don't get it.......also not one deep pass attempt...why is this?

some on here need to be prepared for the reality of what is going to happen next week.....although most on here feel Alex played Very Well....next weeks game is going to be at the Stick...and the home fans have had no problem booing him after one series in the past...mainly because of having to pay to see him and our offenses struggle in the past.......so Alex needs to play efficient....Bruce needs to do his job...the oline will need to do their job...but more importantly Raye is going to have to do his job by putting Alex in the situation to make our offense successful.....or else it is going to get ugly at the stick....even if the game is close... we can't turn the ball over in the middle of the field like today.

I generally agree with you when it comes to QBs, but not here. Alex IS NOT the same QB he was before injury.

He's seeing the field a lot better and is stepping into his throws with a lot more confidence.

The INT wasn't his fault IMO, Crabs got a hand on it.....which to me (ex-WR here) means he could and should have caught it. The fault is on Crabtree for not getting to the pass and instead deflecting it in the air to be intercepted.

Good game by Crabtree though...despite a couple of mistakes, he's still impressing me overall.

Agreed. If it hits you in your hands, you should catch it.

I thought Crabtree played well although he did personally lead to two turnovers. Hard to imagine that he's only been with the offense for a month.

The INT was not on Crabtree.

According to the announcers and post game analyzers it was a little high but he probably should've caught it.What matters most is Raye's vanilla playcalling-if he had opened it up they beat Indy.
The loss wasn't Smith's fault.

Played good enough to win... play calling was questionable... I guess we'll be drafting a couple of O-linemen this upcoming off-season.

If we ever get an offensive line together and find a consistent pass rush, we'll have all of the pieces to be a playoff team. Also we may want to promote our quarterback's coach to coordinator at some point.

Way better than Hill, but he still needs to fix his intermediate passes and screen passes. INT was Crabs fault; need to go up with two hands Rook!

B-

Our main problem is our OL. Chilo seems like the new coming of Kwame Harris (Dumb@ss) and Snyder sucks!
I don't think Crabtree was really expecting the ball on that pass. He looked a little off guard. Today more of his rookie side showed up but he still had a good game. As for Alex, he is nothing like the player he was. Remember, Indy's defense is 3rd against the pass. I believe Alex had the best day of any QB that has played against them. All these things have to be taken into consideration.
Always a day late and a dollar short. There's only one QB that has a winning record still.

actually I think he was a better QB before his injury and still might have been better than he is today so far..... the best I've seen Alex play is when we move him around....when he is allowed (or chooses?) to throw down field..... when no one is open he moves....along the side line while still looking down field and completes a pass....bootlegs, playaction rollouts etc.....but so far from this years Alex he seems to be more comforable and confident when we are in Shotgun.... but this is where I'm not so sure how he is doing....because it seems like the only time we run Shotgun consistently is when we are in 2 min huddle....at the end of the first half or when we are down and the defense is playing semi prevent.....

so I don't really know where he is at right now...is it because he looks best when we are in 2 min situations....or is because Raye is not calling the plays that Alex is most comfortable with..... right now I'm more leaning on Raye at fault....but if Alex throws more passes in the middle that are not accurate than....maaaaan we have a problem.

I wish Sing would just take the playcalling duties away from Raye and give it to Mike Johnson...he is the one who has been working with Alex....I'm sure he knows what is best for Alex and our offense.

Finally a response that isn't dense.
I have to laugh at all the dumbasses that think Hill would have done any better, he would have been sacked more and would have never gotten the ball down the field.
smith was fine today...looking beyond the stats and the fact the niners lost a CLOSE game, smith has shown vast improvement in most of the things he has been previously criticized for....the ball was out quick, the passes were mostly accurate, the pocket presence was fine as well...his footwork is much better also

this is a game that would have been 41-10 in the nolan era (quality opponent on the road, early game---bears, chiefs etc kicked niners ass in similar circumstances under nolan)

the team is getting there---smith opens up the offense so much more than it was under hill, making the talents of guys like crabtree and davis more pronounced....the niners future is so bright im wearing shades

You're absolutely wrong he looks the same as before- he's much better in the 1 and 1/2 games he's played so far than in the past.

Alex Smith's numbers today were okay but not horrible

Before his injury, Alex couldn't throw to WRs. He would simply look for a TE or go to the check-down RB. Norv Turner did a good job of making him look decent in 2006 but if you look at that season closely, you'll see that he played his best football in the first quarter of that season. He was HORRID the rest of that year. What I'm saying is, there's no way he isn't better than pre-injury. I've been the biggest Alex "hater" there is but there's no question in my mind he's gotten better. The passes we see to Bruce/Crabtree would never have happened in the past. He would simply not trust his offense or arm enough to make the play.

As for the play-calling, I agree 100%. We're not playing to his strengths enough. Unfortunately, Raye's stranglehold on the offense won't be loosened since I don't see any way Sing does that to him.

Super...are you saying that I'm being too ticky tacky and critical....no QB is going to be Johnny on the spot all the time??? I wish you felt this way yourself earlier this season.

but like I said before the season started....before preseason....and when he came in last week.... I don't expect him to be perfect....but I don't want him to be inaccurate on passes over the middle.....I don't care who our QB is.... this is a no no...... I don't know if it is mechanics or what....but that pass over the middle is just not acceptable....mainly when we are playing the Colts, we can't give them turnovers..... if he cuts down on those kind of passes he can be such a better QB and fans would not still question him.

In all honesty you can say that about any qb. Take a look at what Manning did today. Or look at what Warner did to the Cards.
