Oh Geez.
Guys, does this even make sense ? Considering a team that is going into the season with low morale offensively (after all, our starters sucked it up pretty bad in preseason), wouldnt it be a better fit to give "captainship" to someone that will carry this offense more, such as Hill or Gore ? What exactly does making VD captain do for us ? Pump him up enough to increase his catches from 1 per game to 2 per game ?
First, Spencer is starter. Now this.
Singletary's lost.........

Thats it just throw in the towel!!! Come on man, this is a commonly used tactic in leading. The idea is to take a valuable commodity ie...VD. Someone with a small scope but a tremendous amount of PASSION and give them a broader scope so that they do not only have to worry about themselves but they have to do what is best for the team. It is the most classic case of team building.
Singletary's lost......... I think the wagon to New England is leaving soon and maybe you should be on that because your loyalty is obviously not with the 9ers!!!

Commonly used tactic in leading ? Please cite examples, oh wise one. Your theory makes absolute sense, but you use it with someone that actually makes an impact on offense/defense. If this were the case, why even bother giving it to Willis ? We already know he's passionate about the team. Lets go out and give it to Ulbrich or Lawson.......

Obviously you have never worked in a proffesional establishment other than perhaps the fry line at McDonalds!! Focus is what is being strived for in VD's case. He has all the talent in the world but he lacks Focus. By making him a captain, Singletary has given him a focus outside of making plays and with that focus his mind will not be distracted by the smack talking and he will be able to concentrate on his job. Focus and concentration = VD's natural talents being displayed.

I thought the team voted on Captains? Guess I was wrong. I'm cool with Vernon(as long as he shows leadership on the field) but would've rather seen it go to Gore.

I figured they would wait till Crabtree signed at the 11th hour on Saturday and then name him offensive captain, so he would be hated and disliked even more by his teammates. That would be good payback.

Sweet. I still think Vernon's going to have a big year despite all the questions about the offense, and this is the first step.

Good job Sing. Way to use the old phrase "give a dog a good name". Call VD the O captain and let him live up to what he think that means.

You guys are crazy, Vernon Davis will be a great team captain. He has a desire to win, plays with energy, anger and a will to succeed. He is a workout warrior with the skills to be very good, the 49ers took a pass catching tightens and asked him to become a blocker, he succedded on a high level. Just wait.

Great Decision! Everyone knows Gore and Hill are the leaders but what's the benefit in naming one of them Captain, they are humble enough to not place any significant importance on it. Instead give it to VD, who probably places allot of significance in that title and it forces him to act appropriately. Like when Gore told VD after his scuffle that hes no longer a rookie and needs to become a man, no more practice scuffles hapened.
Also dont forget that VD works as hard as anyone on the team, lead by example starts in practice and VD gives his all in practice more than anyone except maybe Gore.

I've never worked at McDonalds, but I see what you're saying.
I would add that VD appears to have responded positively to Singletary's coaching, so far. VD was a vocal leader at minicamp and OTAs and appears to have worked hard to become a productive member of the team, not just a guy with "potential."
All that being said, you have to admit that it appears somewhat risky to put a guy as volitile as VD has been in the past in the spotlight as the "leader."
Like all Niner fans, I hope it works , but I admit I'm a little anxious about the move.
Actually, I'm a little nervous about the whole team at this point, til they start kicking butt--beginning with Arizona.
