Hill has the edge because he's 7-3 as a starter.

Smith threw a touchdown tonight. Okay. Nice. Very nice. But he's going to have to show that he can take a team on long drive and take control of a game one way or another. Hill does it with his energy and enthusiasm. Smith has to find some way to manufacture that same kind of leadership. There's a lot of time for the coaching staff to figure it out, but giving the history of the two and their performances tonight, Hill is still ahead.

I want Smith to succeed. I've always been a Smith supporter. But Hill gives me more confidence that we can win.

anyone got a source on that guy saying that keasey broke his arm?

Just saw it on Barrows' blog.

"Bad news for Zak Keasey. He has a fractured forearm. He will have an MRI tomorrow. Look for Friday night hero Brit "2-TD" Miller to see even more action at fullback with Michael Robinson (groin) and Keasey laid up. ... Thomas Clayton also will have an MRI tomorrow. He seemed to badly twist his right knee. He was carted off the field with what the team called a knee sprain but you have to believe it's more serious than that. He also will have an MRI tomorrow."
General impressions:

- Hill got less work but I think looked more natural. When Hill was in I was expecting good things to happen. When Smith was in I braced for mistakes.

- I thought the 1st OL unit looked OK but there's room for improvement. As far as the sacks, the 1st was on Keasey and the next two were on the QB's IMO . . . I don't remember the 4th.

- Coffee was feast or famine either getting stuffed or ripping into the secondary. He looked promising.

- Vernon was engaged in the offense with Hill. Good start for Vern.

Not gonna be judgemental to Smith since its his first game in a while, he looked a little better, not great.

Can't base anything off tonight's performance because Hill didn't play that much

We shall see next game

Hill won tonight 100%. I cannot believe that people think there was no separation. Hill had 1 chance, was 2/2 for 41 yards, and got 3 points. Smith had 4 chances, and only scored when he was given the ball at the 11 yard line.

Kory Sheet looked awesome. He looked better than Coffee in my opinion. Kory averaged 5.1 yards with the 3rd string line blocking for him. By game 3 you all will see. Shaun Hill and Kory Sheets.

Dude Hill was staring down receivers tonight,he cannot do that or he will get hurt or throw the pick.If Smith was doing that you would have a cow.

True, no doubt. But Hill was given one chance and was 2/2. Smith was given 4 chances and only scored when he started on the 11 yard line. One chance versus four chances is not fair. In my opinion, Hill looked far, far, far superior. He did not have one single 3 and out. Alex Smith had three of them.

Im falling to see how superior is holding on to the ball for 6 seconds. Not superior. Drew Bress Superior. Shaun Hill just about even with a guy whose been outta football for two years. he was not 2/2 because he had 4 opportunities to throw the ball.

One chance and Hill scores and is 2/2.
Smith has 4, that is 4 chances. He scores once, when given the ball on the 11 yard line.

Hill never had a 3 and out series, Smith had 3 of them.

Be real man, why did the coaches pull Hill after one series? Because they know Hill is better. They hoped Alex would step up, which he didn't.

You're nuts if you think they were even. Anyone who knows an inkling of football can see that Hill is very far ahead of Smith in this competition. Hill looked exactly how he always has and how I expected and Smith looked exactly how he always has and how I expected. Hill made smart, quick decisions and used his head to make plays (outside of the one sack where he held on way too long). Smith still looks like a frightened turtle out there with happy feet who can't make the reads or the plays. Christ, his first play back in a game was a sack lol. No offense, but if you think Smith is even decent or has a shot at being the starter Week One, you're nuts. Hill may not dazzle but he gets the job done and is good enough for what we need from him.

As for Coffee, I agree with the M-Rob comparison, but it's way too early to tell. Coffee runs hard, but I wasn't impressed. He got yardage here and there and had a few nice plays, so that gives me hope. I think he can be a good back but he needs more time of course.

Overall, the team is right where I expected them to be offensively.

Hill did not look like he did last year,he was staring down his receivers all night.Hill made decent decisions, but they were by no means quick, hence the sack after holding the ball staring at the receiver for 6-7 seconds.I agree that Smith was not spectacular, but you guys are nuts if you actually believe that Hill was. There were sacks tonight for both QB's that were on the line though, they need to step it up and pick up the blitzes better.Coffee averaged 4.8 yards a carry, that is well above average, but you are right about one thing,it is too soon to tell.

Memphis, I know you dont favor anybody in this Comp but is it me or are Hill supprters just Alex Smith haters.

That is exactly what it is,keep in mind alot of these S.Hill supporters were JTO supporters untill he got benched and that just goes to show what kind fans you are dealing with here.

Myself,I'm hoping Alex can overcome adversity and succeed and if not then so be it.I also support S.Hill as well if he is to lead the 49ers because I want the team to succeed bottom line.

I've been a fan of football since my first memory as a four year old. I have never seen someone on any level make me scratch my head like that guy. I'm convinced he was a very bad practical joke.

The 3 sacks we bad. One Hill should have thrown. They all were questionable if it was line or holding on to long. But I think Hill deserves the starting job. Smith is frustratingly all over the place. Good pass, bad pass, bad pass, good pass. Enough with this bust. HILL!

Morgan and Davis look ready to go. Its going to be crazy to see who the WR will be this year. Very good position as a team and fans.

Coffee and Sheets. Wow :)

I couldn't agree more, Smith is just way to inconsistent for me. Hill just has way more confidence out there.

5 of 7 is inconsistent for you? how bout that play to Morgan in front of Bailey. Argue all you want for Hill but He did not go for Bailey's side of the field.

What about the play that Smith missed Coffee on a easy screen pass? That's the inconsistency I'm talking about.

Alex had TWO INCOMPLETE PASSES,give it a rest

In my humble opinion, Hill has the edge after week 1. The game seems to move faster when he is in. As far as this competition goes I am rooting for Smith, but realistically Hill will be our starter, and I am okay with it.

We could do much worse.
I wanna see how Alex does next week against the Raiders before making any comments about the QB Competition. Felt like he was edging his way onto the field after months of being off of it.

Only thing that pissed me off is that we pulled a "Nolan" before half time. That really pissed me f**king off.

Agreed. He moved the chains. Got VD involved as a weapon.

Round 1 goes to Shaun.

Alex moved the chains.Got Josh Morgan involved as a weapon.Threw a TD pass to Bret Miller

Round 1 goes to Alex.

Sweet Jesus. Rount 1 goes to Hill. Hill had one chance and scored. Alex Smith had four chances and only scored when he was given the ball on the 11th yard line. And actually, he should have thrown it Davis who was wide open in the end zone.

Man, I was sleeping, I missed the game, but I'm catchin up here, and... "Sweet Jesus", takes the freakin cake guys, give it up for Kasper D ghost! Smith sucks, get over it, come to the alter of rev-o-la-tion boys.

That reminds me, are there any women on this site or what?

I like women, how bout you? Wait I digress.
This is THE first preseason game, wait till the third, we will have most of our answers then..

Goodbye Jason Hill, Zak Keasey, and Michael Clayton.

Spurlock had a good game and I didn't see much of anything from Jason Hill out there tonight. But hey that just might be me.

Nate Davis is really good at handing the ball off to the running backs.

Oh and keep feeding Vernon the ball. The man is hungry and can become a playmaker for us in the coming weeks, months, and years.
My analysis

Shaun Hill didn't play much, but I think it is because the niners prefer him as the starter. For the time he was in their he looked solid though, except for taking that sack. He made good throws to VD.

Smith I thought he looked too timid. He put up good stats, but his throws didn;t look very crisp. He was short on some of his throws, Morgan came back to make the catch on one of these. I just don't see Smith as an NFL QB. I know he has been out for a while and hopefully it was just rust wearing off, but he still looks like a rookie out there.

VD looked great, I hope it continues, I have supported VD since he was drafted and it finally looks like I won't look like an idiot for doing this.

Coffee looked pretty good. He didn't make any big plays, but he put up good numbers, especially when you consider he had to start his first game as a rookie. I think we finally have a good back up to spell gore around 7-10 carries a game.

Sheets looked quick, and could be our big yardage threat at RB. I hope we can stash him on the PS, but will another team pick him up? Probably not since back up RB's are not hard to find.

Miller looked good out there, but I would like to stash him on the PS squad as well and give the back up FB position to MRob. Robinson should also be valuable as the Taser option.

Pascoe was a little dissapointed, didn't do much, all though none of the receivers really stood out except VD. Hopefully he will show look better in the next preseason games and show he deserves the #3 spot at TE.
