I'm against it. I'm still amazed at how some guys think this is a NEW wrinkle in the defense.

And as far as using the starting OLBs at DE, this is NOTHING NEW. Nolan/Manusky were doing it for several years. And guess what........... It didn't work out that great for Lawson. Why would it work now?
i dont remember lawson in this formation at all last year, did I miss it? Also with Smith and Balmer at the DT's they should pull more blockers. Dont you think quicker DE's would be better then maulers like Rmac (if he comes back from inj) and Evans?

I dont even know where to start with you.
Who are these LBs who have played DE in a 4 down lineman set? I have watched every game for years and we havent had anybody good enough to play DE who was one of our OLBs. Manny has been hurt and Parys is just coming into his own.
Who are these players you speak of because I can only recall Green and he is a situational player at best.
This specific set of players in this nickle set is new and something that looks good on paper atleast.

I'm for it...Franklin nor Soap are pass-rushers, so lets put our 4 best PR's on the field(Balmer can at least passrush for now)...Harris, Spikes, Willis, and even Ulbrich(yikes) can do all the coverage....or we could even put M.Lewis in as a coverage LB'er, and still have Clements, Bly, Brown, Goldson, and Spencer in the secondary...This is a hell of a 4-2-5 !!

I wouldn't call RayMac and Evans "maulers". Evans has been a 4-3 DE his whole career until now. RayMac came out of college as a DE, but has been a bust IMO.
As far as Lawson, I don't remeber him being used at DE last season either. It was mostly Haralson on one side and Green/TBC on the other. Why no Lawson? My guess is they knew he wouldn't be effective from watching him in practice.
I know he was used there before his knew injury from time to time, with not much success.

I was thinking this too Philly used him in a similar way. I`m all for it!

You didn't see Haralson playing DE in the nickel/dime packages last season???
And as far as Green, he was still an OLB. And up until last season, he was our best pass rushing OLB.
All you guys jumped on NCommand for his earlier comment, but he is right about Lawson getting man-handled playing DE.
And if you think Haralson and Lawson are so fast that they could "run right by" the tackles, you are mistaken.

ok so why would we want to put (in your opinion) a bust in RayMac in at DE? I think him and evans are alot closer to maulers then speed rushers, but we are splitting hairs here. Lawson is good to go now so lets see what he's got!
Im excited to see this front 4 combo on the field!!

Actually it was mostly Ray Mac and Smith at DE last year with people getting mixed in.
I didnt jump all over anybody and how is he right? This is the best looking Nickle I have seen on paper in years. Atleast it makes sense compared to packages in years past!

I'm game to see what Lawson can do this season also, but I'm not getting my hopes up. If Lawson can turn into a decent pass rusher it will make the D that much better.
However, I've seen him do next to NOTHING in the pass rush department his entire pro career and I doubt playing DE on 3rd down will change that.

"people getting mixed in".........Yea, like Haralson, Green, and TBC. When this happened, Smith would move inside to play DT.
This scheme is nothing new. The only differnce will be Balmer getting to play over RayMac.

When have the Niners had 2 speed rushers on the ends? Never thats when. Believe what you want but this line was built to rush the passer. Its a new look defense for sure.
