Opinion on Manny Lawson

25% of the board said ten or more sacks. Huge headache coming on in 5,4,3,2,1...OUCH!!!!

If you said ten sacks or more, statistically you are claiming (if 2009 NFL sack stats match the numbers in 2008) that he will finish in the Top 12 in the NFL in sacks for 2009. Only 12 players had 10 or more sacks in 2008.

Is MANNY LAWSON one of the top 12 pass rushers in the NFL?
I mean, I like Manny Lawson, but to say 10+ sacks is silly....no, really silly.

Optimism is one thing, making wild predictions is silly. Statements should be made in a rational form. It is irrational to have Manny (who has never been a good pass rusher in the NFL, and is much better in coverage) to suddenly emerge as one of the best pass rushers in the game.

Don't you remember these gems from the past: JTO will have 4,000 passing yards in 2008...over half the board got this one wrong; and the immortal classic thread where over half the board thought Soap would have 8.5+sacks or more in 2008.

If someone is going to go way out on a limb on these predictions, they better have a thorough explanation. Otherwise, it is blind homerism, and a sloppy analysis, especially when reviewed through stats.

In your opinion. In your opinion. In my opinion, I don't owe you or anyone any kind of explanation for optimism. "Blind homerism" is your term. It's your view. I've been watching the NFL for 52 years and you know what? I think I know more about the game than you do. How bout that? Just because you spend your free time with your head in a bucket of statistics doesn't mean you know more about the game than anyone else. It just means you have a feel for the numbers. Great. Good for you. As you must have figured out by now, the numbers are not always a great predictor for what the future season will bring. Often, they are, but not always. I choose to be an optimist when it comes to the NFL because why not. To me, it's one of the few areas in life where I can afford to be an optimist.

I would just like to understand why some Niner fans get completely pushed out of shape over fans who are optimistic about a player or an upcoming season. What exactly is with that? Frank Gore will rush for 2400 yards, and have 137 receptions and 36 TD's in 2009.
Manny Lawson will have 20 sacks in 2009.
Parys Haralson will have 45 sacks in 2009.
Michael Crabtree will win the MVP award after catching 589 balls for 9578 yards in 2009.

MadDog, don't you think these predictions are a little too optimistic? I mean, I don't want your feelings to get too hurt if Frank doesn't get his 2400.

So far, Manny has not shown that he has the strength/technique to be an effective pass rusher in the NFL, so I don't know how people can realistically expect him to post big numbers.

Hate to be a downer, but this team doesn't have a legitimate edge rushing threat, and will have to scheme things up big-time to generate a pass rush. If we're lucky, one guy (like Parys) will get 7-9 sacks, with Manny probably getting 3-5 sacks (again, if we're lucky).

IMO, a key guy will be Marques Harris...he knows this scheme and has the quickness/ability to be an effective 3-4 pass rush specialist. Don't be surprised to see him rushing on obvious passing downs more so than Manny.

Here's what I would like to see this year: the Niners surprise everyone by staying healthy and performing greater than expected.

Shaun Hill throws for 3200 yards with about 24 TD's and 10 Ints.
Manny Lawson breaks out and has 12 sacks.
Parys Haralson gets a little better and has 11 sacks.
Crabtree is eased into the lineup, but still gets 7 or 8 TD's.

This gets us back to the playoffs, baby!

It's what I'd like to see this year. Do I think it will happen? Probably not. But that's what I'm hoping for and it's definitely within the realm of reasonable possibilities. And, I want anyone who is concerned to know that I will not be emotionally crushed if it doesn't happen.
