AB's Mock Offseason V 2.0

My new mock offseason V 2.0

Current Cap Standing post-Bowman extension

2013- 43 Players signed for $121,364,335 (Includes $406,481 in dead money)
2014 – 29 Players signed for $92,300,836 ($29,699,164 in cap room w/$122M cap)
2015 – 14 Players signed for $60,086,909 (Includes $1,866,666 in dead money, $64,913,091 in cap room w/$125M cap)
2016 – 5 Players signed for $36,227,375 ($93,772,625 in cap room w/$130M cap)

Lets start with 2013 first, we currently, post Bowman deal, are $1,278,655 under the projected $121M cap, plus $1.643M cap credit for uncapped year violations by Dallas and Washington.

Lets clear some cap room for signings now. The key releases.

QB Alex Smith- We avoid the $1M roster bonus, and release him, saving $9.75M
OLB Parys Haralson – Save $2.87M
PK David Akers - $3.05M Saved

I'll put Jonathan Goodwin aside for a bit to see how we get cap wise.

Now extensions for Justin Smith and Donte Whitner to save some cap room.

Justin has a $7.5M base salary which can be lowered down to $940,000. The remaining $6.56M turns into a signing bonus prorated, we'll give him a 4yr deal through 2016. We could use 2016 as a dummy year in case he wants to retire.

The $6.56M over 4 years is prorated at $1.64M a year. We will also keep his $500K workout bonuses the same for each year now. His savings for 2013 would be $4.92M

Salaries below:

2013- $940K Base, $1.64M SB, $500K WK = $3.080M
2014- $2M base, $1.64M SB, $500K WK = $4.14M
2015- $7.5M base, $1.64M SB, $500K WK = $9.64M
2016- $8.5M base, $1.64M SB, $500K WK = $10.64M

Total of 4yr/$27.5M

Donte Whitner has a $3.75M base, lower down to $840K, leaves $2.91M Signing Bonus over a 4yr deal, at $727,500 a year. We would also keep his $250K Workout Bonuses intact for each season. He also has a proration of $833,333 from previous bonus, Now we would save $2,182,500 in cap room.

Salaries Below:

2013- $840K Base, $833,333 Previous Bonus, $727,500 SB, $250K WK = $2,650,833
2014- $1.75M base, $727,500 Bonus, $250K WK -= $2,727,500
2015- $2.25M base, $727,500 Bonus, $250K WK = $3,227,500
2016- $3M base, $727,500 Bonus, $250K WK = $3,977,500

Total of 4yr/$12,583,333 (We could round it down to $12.5M)

Now we have saved between Alex, Haralson, Akers, current, J.Smith and Whitner extensions, we are under by $24,051,155 We could then do this.

Extension for UFA Dashon Goldson – 5yr through 2017 worth average of $7M($35M total). - $5M in 2013, $5M in 2014, $7M in 2015, $8.5M in 2016 and $9.5M in 2017

Extension for UFA Tavares Gooden – 2yr through 2014 worth average of $1.5M(Each year).

Extension for UFA Delanie Walker – 3yr through 2015 worth $2.5M average($7.5M total) $2M in 2013, $2.5M in 2014 and $3M in 2015

Let Brandon Jacobs, Larry Grant, Leonard Davis, Clark Haggans, Ted Ginn Jr., all go.

Will decide on Sopoaga or Jean Francois.

We re-sign Our 8 PS players to 2yr deals worth $900K( Takes up $3.24M for 2013 and $3.96M for 2014).

Now for 2013 – We have $10,216,155 in cap room. Of course that doesn't include releasing Goodwin.

Now I go with re-signing Jean Francois to a 4yr deal worth $2.5M a year, total of $10M. His salaries would be $2M(2013), $2.5M(2014), $3M(2015) and $2.5M(2016).

I would also sign Kickers Giorgio Tavecchio and Fabrizio Sccacia to 1yr deals worth minimum, has no effect on cap, as it's for rookie minimum.

But with RJF signed we have $10,716 ,155 in cap room, take away lets say $5M for rooks, we have $5,716,155 to spend.

Lets not forget 1yr minimum deals for McBath and Brock, 1yr $630k each. Minus $405K each for replacing minimum guys. Leaves us $5,266,155 under.

Now look for the future.

2014 - $105,878,336 committed for 44 players signed ($16,121,664 in cap room w/$122M cap)
2015- $85,954,409 committed for 20 players signed (Includes $1,866,666 in dead money, $39,045,591 in cap room w/$125M cap)
2016 - $61,844,875 committed for 9 players signed ($68,155,125 in cap room w/$130M cap)

Tough Cuts: Dobbs(Tukuafu is cut)
Great detail, thanks. But why let Grant walk? I know that's a minor part, but still a part I disagree with. Also I want to keep Ginn. The rest looks great. Thanks again!
Superb cap analysis as always. Draft talk is way too early for me. I assume strict BPA with perhaps an emphasis on the trenches. Two questions:

If we need to re-tag Goldson the cap number for 2013 will not be much different than under your postulated extension for him, right? Would it be actually worth tagging the man again no matter what, just to keep room for 2014 and on?

With around 5 mil cap room left for 2013, what is the maximum conceivable FA contract we could offer to one guy? I'm asking this to know which "OMG! WE NEEDZ TO SIGN THIS D00D NOW!" posts to discount come free agency.
Great Draft! Great work as always! I always enjoy reading your posts AB!
Wouldn't we draft a conerback in the 1st three round, and not 2 pass rushers? Don't we still have two rookie DE's coming off injury that will be available next year?

A 5th rounder coming off of season ending injury and a 7th rounder who is on the PS, not even the 53-man roster. You don't change plans based on that

Grant will eventually want to start , and want starter money $$$$

I would not argue with Ginn coming back as the teams KR , but at a reduced price

Bringing back Goodwin would be a great move , but not at his current price tag ..Kilgore and a 3rd round draft pick to compete for the starting center job would also work

Well said.
I wouldnt mind seeing a DB in the 3rd instead of an OLB but only if its a better value. The first 2 picks are perfect as we got 2 guys at those positions that are getting older and with the money we'll have tied to our LB's will make it hard to sign another Justin Smith type guy in free agency so we'll have to draft there early and often to make sure the front 7 is dominant in the future.
A guy like Carradine in the 3rd means we dont need to sign guys like Clark Haggans.
Fine work!

Question: Why the #3 pick on a Center when we have a few good candidates on board - wouldn't we get more value by going after a Safety in such a deep Safety draft?

It's the whole notion that he may bolt for money and playing time, maybe starting. Some say Ginn is a 1 trick phony kind of guy, I like him, but not sure the team will want him back.

Thank you. We coluld tag Goldson, but I always think re-signing a tagged player long term makes the relationship better. The tag number for Goldson would be about $7.45M next year, a 120% raise.

$5M could get a DL, or a solid CB. Also forgot to mention is Rogers, if he under performs in 2013, he could be cut in 2014 offseason, freeing up even more cap room.

Thank you very much, I put a great amount of time into this. Then had to redo it when we extended Bowman. But it was fun, and will be fun throughout the season and offseason.
need a legit OT Jason

I like Goodwin as a starter, who eventually passes it to Kilgore, or whoever we draft. I love Braxston Cave on ND, I had to have a Irish, big Irish fan here. Tough and Nasty, I love watching the ND Oline. Zach Martin, Chris Watt, Mike Golic Jr. all great players.

Probably the one questionable pick, but I think having two capable centerss(Cave and Kilgore) for the future would be great.

Safety wise, I had a tough time. Needs wise we need DL depth and an OLB, and a 3rd QB. So a S should of been in there, but I overlooked it, as usual, I overlook something.
