Von Miller is a must in Rd 1

Browse 49ers books and videos
Will he lose that explosive first step if he bulks to 250? If he doesn't, he's your guys hands down above any of them including Quinn.

You can see he has "IT" when getting to the QB. The instincts and that first initial move so important in pass rushing no matter where you are coming from, it's always attack. He's it. His chest of moves continues to grow. His speed helps on the edge too, driving RBs back to the waiting ILBs. Perfect.

Sure he needs to bulk, but he could immediately have an impact on third downs if not take the WILL spot from anyone from a pure pass rush perspective.

I just go on that first move.

he is more of a manny lawson then elvis dumervil. Yes I agree he is a better passrusher but he is tall and skinny, he is 6'3 240. Elvis is 5'11 250 something there is a big difference.

You beat me to it. There is no comparison between those two players. Miller on the other hand is almost built exactly like Lawson, except a little shorter. I like what I've seen in college and although I'm not a person who believes in staying away from someone purely based on size, I think I'd rather go for Robert Quinn at #7.

The only way we take Von Miller is if we trade down.
Good player, but just don't fit our draft picks. Unless we trade down or get another first rounder, he's not an option.

And somehow I doubt he's who we move up/down for.

Miller should be our pick hands down. He's exactly what we need on defense. Best part is he already played the same role so no need to HOPE he transitions to 3-4.

I watched Manny Lawson play in college and he never really seemed to impress me. The sacks I seen him get, 1 was a coverage sack where the QB held on to it and someone else forced the QB to Manny and the other the QB literally just ran right into a blocked Manny Lawson. Lawson wasn't really a good pass rusher in college. Von Miller is a true pass rusher. So to look at build as a reason is ridiculous. It's not like the guy played in a weak arse conference racking up numbers. He did it versus good teams.

Not too mention at 6'2 his 240ish is the same as a 6'4 guy at 250.

James Harrison (pitt) 6'0 242
James Farrior 6'2 242
Larry Foote 6'1 239
Keyaron Fox 6'3 235
Lawerence Timmons 6'1 234

Joey Porter 6'3 248

Maybe that's why Pittsburgh always draft well. They draft FOOTBALL PLAYERS and not height, weight & speed.

BTW how's that 6'1 240 working out for Patrick Willis?

those are the only 3-4 outside linebackers you listed. we are talking about passrushers not regular linebackers. James harrisson is much bigger for his height then von miller. he is barely 6 foot and some say he is 5'11. Joey porter is still heavier and i think more explosive. von miller at this point body wise is most comparable to manny lawson. he is tall athletic and for a passrusher, skinny. he just needs to add weightl. im not saying he cant be but we are in a position in the first to get a top tier player who maybe bigger and more athletic and could be a day one starter.
I believe the issue with Manny Lawson is his how he is utilized in his current role. Unfortunately, I never saw him as a pass-rusher, but a guy who can continually set the edge and have the speed to match up against mismatch-saavy players like quick TE's and slot receivers...yes, he was taken in the first round, but I rather him take down the guys who keep our boys on the field after a 3rd down conversion than rushing the passer, he was never good at it from the get go. Simply put, he's better in that capacity than what he's being asked to do. And with that, he could've been taken in the second round versus the first. I believe we trade down this year to get a football player who has a relentless motor, great work ethic and knows how to get to the QB. No more conversions please.

I understand that, but you act as if those backers don't have to go against big men when they go in on a blitz or for a tackle for that matter. The point is they're strong/smart enough to play against the big boys. As to is Von, who BTW I think is far more explosive than Harrison.

You don't pass up pass rushers because of 40 times or height/weight. I recall wanting Woodley a couple years back only to have the "experts" here say he's not fast enough to play OLB.

Combine time will give us the tale of the tape, but it should be neither here nor there to be honest.
Kiper has him going at 8 and McShay has him at 11. He is all over place on people's boards. If Al Davis had a top 5 pick, I could see him taking Miller. Then again he could fall to the mid 20s. I see a productive player who could thrive in a blitzing scheme at any LB position on the 49ers.
Meh... 230-ish lbs... 4-3 LB all the way. He will get engulfed easily by blockers that he can't run right around.

Not the same comparison. At OLB, you go against offensive linemen more often than you do playing on the inside. Miller looks really good and is the best prospect AFTER Robert Quinn who should be available at #7.
Thank god someone is talking sense. He is also two inches taller than James Harrison. He is a beast, and needs to be our OLB. The guy can flat out rush the passer unlike anyone we have and the tape is much, much better than Quinn's from what I have seen.

He is much worse vs the run. Perhaps he will get better with added bulk.
I don't the Niners drafting another guy who has a big IF attached to him. IF he bulks up. IF he gets better vs. the run. Do you guys really want to go through another 5 years of a Manny Lawson scenario? I want a guy that can step in and have an impact right away without a lot of ?'s attached to his physical tools.

Oh yes, because every single player drafted continues to play the same way he did in college.

Miller is a great pass rusher but he is small whether you guys want to argue that or not and it translates into his game. He's a liability playing against the run and having to play pass coverage.

and people keep throwing out Harrison and other shorter linebackers who weight the same as Miller. If you're shorter and weigh the same you have more power/strength and it allows you to be more stout when facing offensive linemen.

Is Manny Lawson a big guy? Same idea there...taller guy without much weight on him.

I'll be very curious to see how Miller measures at the Senior Bowl and how he looks at the practices. I'm sure he'll get high marks in his pass rushing but I want a guy who can rush the passer and not be a liability elsewhere at #7.

Yeah. Remember Everett Brown, whom the Panthers traded their 1st to us for? How did he turn out? He was a small sized pass rusher.
