Mallett or Newton

What pocket, beside's mike blocking no one seems to beable to stay infront of a defender. I have to go with newton behind are oline simply because we can't protect anyone. I'd leave troy smith to start until newton's game steps up even if that means 2 years of troy smith starting. And nothing against troy i think as he learns the system we can use him to his full talent. But still Aj Green BEFORE EVERYONE but luck.

And FIRE SING, first because no matter what player we get it's going to be run run run, s**t punt. Run run run punt, run run run put, run crap ok lets pass o sack ok 3 and 30 pass o holy crap troy smith just completed a pass for a td. ok run run run punt run run run punt.

Sing calls a time out, ok i shall this on film it will work. Run Run Run Run ok better now i can watch my defense defend a short field for the loss.

In this choice I go with Newton. The guy has proven he has the right mentality - with all that has went on around him - there is no question he has made mistakes - but he wins games.

As for whether he's available to us it is questionable. Taking part in a chat on nfl.com this week their expert (LaCanfora?) thought Newton would end up going top 5. Other recently updated sites still have Newton as low as the number 5 among QBs.

And ultimately QBs in recent drafts have been unpredictable as to where they would go.

In the upcoming draft I think we currently stand 8th in the order. And most of the sides above us could draft a QB. I'd say Dallas, Denver, and Detroit would not - and Carolina, Cincinnatti, Arizona and Buffalo could. And Detroit could feasibly go QB if doubtful about Stafford injuries.

And a number of teams that could end up ahead of us in selection order like Vikings, Seahawks, Redskins could also go there.

Ultimately the draft is still a long way off, but I go with Newton over Mallet, as we need players that win.

We all know QB is one of the biggest needs for the niners, so who would you pick?

*please don't make this an Andrew Luck thread, as there is already so many.

locker over either of them.

Locker? You mean the guy who's completion percentage this year is 56%?

if you wanna take potential over nfl-readiness, why not? this season showed all of locker's weaknesses very well...we would be prepared. but u don't know that much about newton.

1.) Drafting "readiness" over potential in the 1st round is a recipe for disaster. I'll always go for the guy with the most overall talent over the guy who might be able to slide in sooner, but that is viewed as limited in potential.

2.) If you've been watching Locker at all this year, you can see that he's still a few years away from being a legit pocket passer as well....so to think that he's somehow more ready than Newton to step in and start for an NFL team....I'm not buying it at all. For different reasons, they're both pretty raw (almost equally so) and will need time to prove they can play at the next level.

3.) I don't know why everyone is so adamant about getting/expecting a rookie to come in an start sooner rather than later. Are we on the verge of NFL dominance....are we knocking on the door of the Super Bowl and only a QB away? Not even close. This team is years away from being a legitimate playoff contender (mediocre pass rush, inconsistent o-line, non-proven WRs, horrible secondary, RB heading into his final contract year, etc., etc.), so being driven by the mindsight of "we need a rookie QB to start immediately" is both silly and disasterous. If we're going to spend a high pick on a QB, let's be a little smarter about it than Nolan was. There's nothing wrong with picking a QB with a ton of talent but that needs 1-2 years of seasoning, while we also address the other major holes on this team.

What's so wrong with taking the Bill Walsh approach to rebuilding (3 years to get a ring)?

~Hire a new offensive-minded coach (Walsh-like)
~Draft a QB that the coach can mold (Joe was brought along his first 2 years)
~Sign a vet QB to run the team in the interim (Walsh had DeBerg; we can sign someone comparable)
~Draft to fit your new schemes/philosphies (the kind of talent that compliments your rookie QB)

Yes, I know...we're impatient because we haven't won a ring since 1995 (hah, most teams don't have even one....we have 5 and we all act like the sky is falling around here).

But it's that impatience (along with mediocre-to-awful choices at the head coaching spot) that has gotten us to the place we're at now. We fans must face facts...the team needs to start over with a 2-3 year rebuilding plan as opposed to falsely assuming that we're only a QB away from ending our troubles.

I say take the time to do it right, build a solid foundation and bring the new QB along slowly while you inject new talent, schemes, approaches and a new, winning mindset to the roster.

dont get me wrong, i am not pro-readiness-over-potential...it's the argument of those guys who still cry about the draft of smith (potential) over rodgers (nfl-ready)

however, locker is a pass-first QB...

i think nearly the same, namely that we have way too many holes to fill before we can consider ourselves as a serious playoff-contender...some guys just dont want to believe that our ass would be whipped in this year's playoffs even if we had a better QB...

I like your idea, but the young offensive and deffensive talent that we have right now will be aged, and/or left via free agency because we are in the same mode we have been in for the last 8-9 years, rebuilding. We are built to win now. That is why everyone is in a rush to win now.

Mallett is better than Newton at the pro level. Newton probably won't even play QB. But with that being said I don't want either.

Newton WILL play QB. To what level is another matter. There will be some that think he's better suited as a TE, etc.

But having read many opinions on him, there are enough in the NFL that see him as a QB prospect to ensure he does play there.

Ultimately, if there is a top notch upgrade to our secondary available at our pick, I take that over a QB.

Yes - some support your opinion, but as I've said there are many that go the other way.

And while the general consensus has him going somewhere between 20th-40th, there are a growing number that envision him going higher.

And there are a large number of teams that look like they may be seeking a QB this off season, which can also make QBs go earlier.

He's no Warren Moon, I'd rather have Mallett.
Newton. But it's tough. Mallett terrifies me with some of the decision he makes. He reminds me a great deal of Cutler. Big arm, small brain on the field often times.

Yes, Mallett has swagger, tremendous upside, and has shown an ability to make some plays in the clutch, but this QB class altogether is a very risky group.

Based on everything I've seen, it's really hard for me to personally pinpoint "The one guy" I'd take above all the rest. Every QB has some issues. It's going to depend on how these guys are nurtured and developed from day one. What system they go into, what situation and cast they go into all play a big part in this.

Honestly, for once I can say it's pretty much a crapshoot this year. Some will certainly separate themselves from the pack, undoubtedly, in the All-Star games and Combine workouts, but at this point, if you've really watched all these guys this year, you know that all of these QBs are anything but sure things coming out right now.
Cam in SEC title game tonight - 13 yards per pass attempt (280 yds), 3 TDs passing, plus 1 rushing. And that's 1 half.

It's always hard to tell with college football. But doing this after everything that has went before him has to bring you round a bit.

He's not gonna be a sure thing after such little time as a starter at top college level. But Sanchez isn't doing too bad in New York, is he?

I still want that CB spot filled, but if they're gone I want this guy. Or someone else. :) Who am I fooling - there's a long time to the draft and I'm open to persuasion.

I agree that we are years away. We have more problems than QB. Picking a QB is fine if it turns out to be the right one. And more WZers need to be more realistic about where we really are. We are a pretty bad team and much more than a QB away.
Neither. I see Newton as a great college QB who will struggle in the pros, and Mallett as a guy who will be broken down in about 5-7 years.
