If we're picking around 8-15 and we have an offensive minded HC like Jim Harbaugh, I will be content with selecting Jake Locker. If Locker performs well in the combine and the Senior Bowl, teams will be looking at his unfulfilled potential and how great he could be with the right coaching and providing him with the weapons he never had in Washington.
Of course this is all if we don't do all we can to get Luck

if Luck doesn't declare, is there another consensus #1 pick?

This is all very frustrating to me. I know we have not seen enough from any of the current QBs on the roster to NOT use the first pick on a QB next year. However, I am also fully convinced that the MAJOR reason we have not seen better play from the QBs is poor coaching. We haven't had decent coaching here for 10 years. With a quality QB coach and an OC that can actually put in a decent system, we may have an acceptable answer already on the squad. Unfortunately we won't know whether or not that is the case until Singletary is gone and a new HC is in place. (assuming the new HC is somebody that knows offense) That leaves us forced to use the top pick on a QB when a pass rusher and CB are just as important.
Failure to develop players is the main reason this team is still struggling. That is all on the coaching staff.

Am I crazy to think Locker could have a Clausen like fall on draft day? If not all the way out of the 1st rd. then real late. I mean you can't blame ALL his problems this yr. on a lack of supporting cast.

I do agree with you. Locker hasn't performed well this season, and we can all use the "no talent around him" excuse over and over, but his decision making skills have also been in question this season. Some plays, he looks great, and some others, it makes you scratch your head. Also keep in mind that he's been playing hurt lately. A few weeks ago, he had a deep thigh bruise and now he has a cracked rib.

At this point, without the right coaching staff in place, I'm against taking a QB in the first round.
An offensive minded head coach that has a track record of developing QBs can work through talents that may have footwork issues, reading defenses, decision making, and other issues that limit QBs who dominate at the college level, but struggle in the pros. Right now, Andrew Luck is the only one who is ready, and then there is everybody else. Without the right coach or if Luck doesn't declare, I'm ok with passing on a QB in the frist round and going after an elite CB, DE, or WR.

no consensus #1 if Luck stays, maybe AJ Green but idk.
only problem is WRs are not worth a high pick. Lets try this: name an ELITE WR currently in the NFL who has a ring. Between all the elite receivers, I can count 1 ring.
Elite means Fitzgerald, not a great player like Ward.
Reggie Wayne.

His inconsistency scares me and I keep hearing about his laziness when it comes to gameday preparation. I would be frightened to have him as a high pick. He has the talent but he's still very raw, IMO
