Positions you want to see drafted next year

This all depends on contract negotations too. If we don't resign VD (God forbid) then we need to look for a TE in the 2nd round.

TE is not a position we should be looking to spend a high pick on, even if he goes. I don't think our TEs are too bad even without him. Fullback, on the other hand, is likely to be a position of need by then. I suspect we will also need depth O linemen. But a bit of emphasis on the D line, as you have described, won't go amiss.

Delanie Walker is too inconsistent to be a reliable threat on offense, and Raye loves to incorporate tight ends into the schemes. If we can't get VD signed we have to get a pass-catching tight end and the best ones will be gone by the 3rd round.
Order of importance, not necessarily draft position:

1. CB (unlikely, we'll probably sign a vet)
2. NT (dependant on Franklin)
3. OLB (a pass rushing specialist)
4. FB (we should splurge for a stud FB... 3rd-5th Rd)

Depth:
Oline
DE
Safety
It's nice that we're finally getting close to a point where we can truly draft the BPA.
CB (with returning skills would be nice )
OLB (9ers simply need a feared dominate pass rusher to play in a 3-4)
NT (D linemen take a while to groom no need to spend a 1st or 2nd rounder on a "project")
RB (Gore is putting yardage on the tank and that's not good when you have a bunch of incumbents as his back up)
WR (Hill might be gone but hopefully Williams gains some knowledge his rookie year)
Fill out the roster? No need for ILB with 3 waiting in the wings, and hopefully we are good on guards and safetys for a time to come

I don't argue with what you say. I just think we will have too many more serious needs to take a te in the first two or three rounds

I really think the DL will need attention next year. It's obvious they are not going to invest in Franklin, given that he will be 31 next summer. D. Evans' contract will also be up. So, that's 2 guys out of 7 that will most likely be gone.

This may be the year that RJF and Balmer really step up, but they will still need more bodies.
I too think DL is going to need to be addressed. I am not sure I would use a first but a big mean tough tackle would be my choice in the second or third, preferably third if given a choice. If we do not need a top QB, I would trade down possibly to second round with two extra picks and get some corners and ILB in the second. I think we actually have some surplus talent that teams would want and using them, I think a quick runningback would not be amiss. I believe barring injuries, we should be ok in the OL, recievers, FBs, TEs, and even QB. By the way, people have been souring on Nate Davis but I think he is suffering from Alex Smith syndrome, too much coachingitis. He seems to be shuffling too much thru his head and suffering for it. I suspect he will revert once the game settles in for him. It is hard to say the DL sucks since the defense is so solid but one big good DL would help make the defense a long term good one. I think we could use a really quick top corner but this guy Adams supposedly is no slowpoke and a thumper besides. He seems like he could be a hidden gem type of player. I thought the real lack was in the safety area with Roman and Lewis in terms of speed. with Reggie Smith, Curtis
Taylor and Taylor Mays, I think what we thought we lacked in speed is going to be
a lot less noticeable. I would still love a pretty good fast corner to pick up. I am not sure I would pick 2 as I normally would because we seem to be in pretty decent shape already but depending on the quality of the pick, I think it would just be one top pick. Even though Robinson may be viewed as a top special teamer, I think a fast versatile runningback is more useful. It seems Coffee may not make it and I think both Robinson and Coffee might better be replaced. If after all that, I think ILB would be a good backup but with McKillop returning next year, OLB pass rusher might be worth considering. All in all, if we do not need to draft a QB, I think trade downs next year would be a great avenue to gain great backups and lower costs as well. Too many big picks turn out to be fermented.

In the hopes Alex Smith has a great year...
Defensive line and a corner back in the first 2 rounds.

If Alex Smith continues to stink it up like he has so far...
QB and DL/CB in the first 2 rounds.
NT, CB, OLB, ILB, C, FB & T
