Big Boards Averages and Niners' Picks

For curiosity, I did up a spreadsheet of 6 Big Boards freely available over the web, including MadDogs. All 6 were from March 7-22. I then calculated the average draft position for each of the 325 or so players and variances (indicating the size of the variation between the player's position on each of the Boards). The Big Boards I used were MadDog, CBS (NFL draftscout), Great Blue North, Scout.com, and Pigskin Paul.

Based on these averages the players I found in the Niners' draft positions (post compensatory picks) were:
13 - R McClain, Alabama, ILB
17 - E Thomas, Texas, S
49 - D Franks. Oklahoma, CB/RS
79 - J Jerry, OleMiss, OG/RT
113 - D Butler, Washington, ILB
145 - C Black, LSU, OG
182- W Thurmond III, Oregon, CB
206 - AJ Jefferson, Fresno St, CB/RS
224 - M Kafka, Northwestern, QB.

Not a bad draft IMHO altho heavy on the CBs and ILBs and light on tackles.

For those interested in the potential tackle average draft pick distribution (given the lack of a possible tackle until the 4th based on the above picks) in the first 4 rounds:
Okung (5); Bulaga (6); Williams(12); Davis(15);
Campbell(22);Brown(36); Ducasse(57);Saffold(62);
Veldheer(75);Jerry(79); Johnson(85);Asamoah(88); Capers(99);
Calloway(108);Fox(124).

The variances between the Big Boards really zoomed after the first 45 or so picks, with the Boards differing on most players by 3 to 5 rounds. Even for the players between the 20th and the 45th pick, there were substantial differences in draft positions - using tackles for example, the pick range for Bruce Campbell was 8-36; Charles Brown 23-58; Ducasse from 45-96; Saffold from 28-125; Veldheer from 67-106; Jerry from 53-145.

Graham had an average placement of 22, with picks running from 15-33. (15,16,20,22,23,33). This average resulted in him being the 20th pick.

(For example, Suh was the only player with an average of 1, therefore he was considered pick 1. Both the next two players, Bradford and G. McCoy averaged 3, but McCoy is the 2nd pick because his individual placements (3,4,2,3,2,3) had less variance than those of Bradford (6,3,1,2,3,2). The sorting was done automatically this way so that the pick numbers were consecutive like in an actual draft. It gets a little complicated otherwise because, for example, there were 3 players with 9 average, 2 with a 10, etc.)

McCourty was 27 average, with picks from 16 to 34 (16,17,30,31,33,34), resulting in him as the 26th pick.

How about Spiller, Best, Iupati?

Spiller was 7th pick (average of 9 based on 15,8,7,6,10,6).
Best was 39th pick (average of 42 based on 31,36,30,39,42,74).
Iupati was 16th pick (average of 19 based on 16,24,20,17,19,19).

Ok.
Saffold was 62nd pick (average of 69 - range of 28,43,51,69,100,125).
Asamoah was 88th pick (average of 91 - range of 56,64,72,102,108,141).

It's interesting neither Williams nor Iupati are available where we'd likely select them. Given this, I hope the FO is ready for some trading up or down.

I really doubt we draft mcclain. that would be way too much money invested in the ILB position.
