San Francisco 49ers rookie wide receiver Dante Pettis got a lot of work in the slot during Tuesday's practice. The team kicked off its organized team activities this week, and Tuesday's practice session was one of three over the course of the next few weeks that will be open to the media.

Pettis received a significant amount of the reps because last year's starter at the position, Trent Taylor, is dealing with a back injury, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

"His back's bothering him," Shanahan said. "He went a little bit yesterday, and he just wasn't looking right, so we pulled him out. We didn't let him go today. It will be week-to-week."

The 49ers made Taylor a fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech last year. During his rookie season, he registered 43 receptions for 430 yards with two touchdowns.

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel will be wearing No. 1 the next time he steps onto the football field, leaving behind his No. 19 jersey. It's an unfortunate change for any fan who previously invested in a Deebo jersey—unless they consider it a throwback. Newly signed wide receiver Trent Taylor quickly claimed No. 19 after rejoining the team on a one-year deal following three seasons elsewhere. Taylor last wore No. 15 with the 49ers, a number currently worn by wide receiver Jauan Jennings. Taylor also wore No. 81 with the team. The 49ers' official team site has listed the jersey numbers for several of the team's free-agent newcomers (and Maliek Collins, acquired via a

During the NFL owners' meetings, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York noted the significant rise in quarterback salaries in recent years. However, he acknowledged the market value of such players, recognizing that he'll have to sign a substantial check for his young quarterback, Brock Purdy, next year. York stated, "And to me, the quarterback is the most important position, not just in football, but in all sports, and those guys should be paid a lot." Last week, Brock Purdy addressed York's comments, showing no concern about the financial implications that will arise next year. Instead, he
