San Francisco 49ers left tackle Joe Staley returned to practice in a limited manner on Wednesday but didn't want to talk to reporters about his fractured orbital bone, which looked much better than it did a week ago. As a precaution, Staley's practice helmet was fitted with a tinted visor for added protection.

Staley is not expected to play against the New York Giants and likely will not see the football field until after the 49ers' bye week. That means his earliest possible return date will probably fall on November 26, when the 49ers host the Seattle Seahawks.

On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that wide receiver Trent Taylor (ribs), tight end George Kittle (ankle), and linebacker Elijah Lee (knee) are not expected to play against the Giants. All three were held out of Wednesday's practice.

"[Taylor] was complaining about some soreness in his ribs," Shanahan said on Monday. "He had an awkward cut. You can see it on tape. You can just see him reach for his ribs and he fell and ended up breaking one."

The 49ers are hoping to get Taylor back after the bye week.

Other injured players that participated in Wednesday's practice were defensive tackle D.J. Jones (knee), fullback Kyle Juszczyk (neck), guard Brandon Fusco (biceps), cornerback K'Waun Williams (quadricep), and defensive ends Aaron Lynch (calf) and Solomon Thomas (knee).

Shanahan expects each player within that group to be a game-time decision on Sunday. Juszczyk and linebacker Mark Nzeocha practiced in blue no-contact jerseys.

Defensive end Tank Carradine (ankle), who is expected to be activated off of injured reserve, started practicing with his teammates on Wednesday. He is not eligible to play in a game until November 26. If Carradine is not activated to the 53-man roster before then, he will revert back to injured reserve for the remainder of the season.

Below are the official Wednesday practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Giants, as provided by the 49ers Communications department.

What is Brandon Staley's role with the 49ers?

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

Following the dismissal of Steve Wilks, Brandon Staley interviewed for the San Francisco 49ers' vacant defensive coordinator job. Opting to go with internal candidate Nick Sorenson allowed the team to maintain continuity while entrusting the defense to a play-caller very familiar with the scheme the 49ers want to deploy. Sorenson previously worked with former defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and served as an assistant with the Seattle Seahawks, so that familiarity gave him the edge. Where did that leave Staley? The 49ers hired him, too. However, Staley won't serve as the team's defensive coordinator. Right now, he has the title of assistant head coach. He will be heavily involved in game-day planning. Some were related to the topics Shanahan and Lynch discussed. Others were not. Let's jump in and see what is on your mind. Do the 49ers add a starting safety? Who would be the best fit, and is Talanoa Hufanga's job safe? - Dave B. It wouldn't surprise me if the 49ers added another safety in free agency. In fact, I'd say it's

Report: 49ers CEO Jed York set to become principal owner

By David Bonilla
Mar 25

According to Ben Fischer of the Sports Business Journal, San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York is preparing to assume the role of principal owner of the team by acquiring the necessary equity from his mother, Denise DeBartolo York. "The transaction and title change is subject to NFL approval, expected during the league meetings underway today in Orlando," Fischer wrote. "It's not known precisely how much of the club Jed York will own individually after this deal, but the family owns more than 95% of the 49ers, valued at $6B by Forbes in 2023." Fischer also notes that York will maintain his position as CEO of the team, where he will continue to directly oversee
