@LombardiHimselfWere coming up on the 2-year anniversary of the night that the 49ers signed both Trent Williams and Alex Mack. Wild times
-
Profile
@LombardiHimselfThe 49ers bent over backwards with Colton McKivitz's deal, adding 3 void years just to save $219,000 of cap room. The specificity of their cap actions the last few days has been intriguing. And it helped pay for Hargrave, Darnold and BrendelFull piece: theathletic.com/4308065/2023/0...

@LombardiHimselfWe've hit that point of offseason where premature judgments about the 49ers' roster quality roll in.SF has 55 spots filled. They still have to pick up 35 more players. It's not productive to pass definitive judgment 60% of the way in. So much player acquisition still ahead
-
Profile
@LombardiHimself49ers building strategy:1. Acquire/develop A-list players2. Pay those A-list players (list can grow as salary cap does)3. Dont pay B-listers when FA comes; obtain comp picks thru departures instead4. Develop staff (restocks coaches + more comp picks)5. Pick next A-listers
-
Profile
@LombardiHimselfRe: 49ers roster replenishment: Now is a good reminder time SF will be doing a lot of heavy lifting through the draft. They're not losing true front-liners, so mid-round developmental picks can slot in efficiently. And the 49ers have 11 of them. Important to keep big-picture view
-
Profile
@LombardiHimselfThe 49ers are currently stocked up at DT, but they're primed to add more edge rushers as Nick Bosa, Drake Jackson and Alex Barrett are the only three DEs on the roster.Full depth chart: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d...#gid=0

@LombardiHimself49ers were very much expecting to lose Charles Omenihu and Samson Ebukam**. This isn't surprising news and it's why there's such a spotlight on Drake Jackson. Also why they paid big for Javon Hargrave. He was a rising tide that lifted all DL boats in Philly. Can be same in SF
-
Profile
@nwagonerPandemic allowed #49ers to keep roster in tact more than normal. Drop in cap led to drop in prices. Now that cap has jumped and Niners are coming off big year, they're being picked over. Could sense on locker clean out day they knew it was coming. Why many players were emotional.
-
Profile
@LombardiHimself$10 million APY for Charles Omenihu, who's leaving the 49ers to the Chiefs. SF looks very primed to again max out the player comp formula. NFL rules cap it at 4 draft picks. Given the way this FA is going, 49ers in line to receive that in 2024
-
Profile
@nwagoner#49ers FA scorecard so far: Additions: DT Javon Hargrave, QB Sam DarnoldDepartures: T Mike McGlinchey, QB Jimmy Garoppolo, DT Hassan Ridgeway, S Jimmie Ward, CB Emmanuel Moseley, DE Samson Ebukam, LB Azeez Al-Shaair, OL Daniel Brunskill, DL Charles Omenihu
-
Profile
@nwagoner49ers still have time to make more additions to cancel some of these out but trending in the direction of the maximum of four comp picks again next year. And some of them will be in earlier rounds (3, 4).
-
Profile
@TracyFGSNThe #49ers are absolutely killing the comp pick game. It looks like they could have five again next year, which would be the max.

@LombardiHimselfFred Warner's 2023 salary-cap hit was $18.5 million. After this conversion of base salary to signing bonus, it is about $9 million. The 49ers have $9.5 million of cap space on the eve of the new league year
-
Profile
@nwagonerAnother #49ers restructure, this time with LB Fred Warner as they save an additional $9.5 million, per @FieldYates. Charvarius Ward and Warner restructures create a little under $20 million in cap space for Niners.

@LombardiHimselfThe 49ers are doing some wild stuff to stay barely under the salary cap, like scrounging to save a buck at a time with voidable years on short-term deals.I examine how the 49ers creatively fit Javon Hargrave and Sam Darnold under the salary cap: theathletic.com/4308065/2023/0...

@LombardiHimselfI guessed which 49ers free agents would stay and which would leave and now I am keeping track of results... green (correct) and red (incorrect) in the right-hand column. So far, Emmanuel Moseley is the only incorrect guess. Didn't think he'd command $6m coming off ACL

@LombardiHimselfNo real surprises re: who 49ers haven't retained so far. We know they have about $0 of cap space at moment and can surmise that, beyond Hargrave splash, they'll be zeroed in only on cost-efficient signings/only restructuring when necessary. $6m for Moseley (DET) didn't fit that

@LombardiHimselfWaiting to see how much 49ers were able to backload Jake Brendel's contract, but after that deal I estimate that they're just barely under the salary cap. We're talking less than $1 million of room. Another restructure likely needed if they're going to conduct bigger business
-
Profile
@LombardiHimselfWhat we learned at Combine:The 49ers are bullish on Charvarius Ward and Deommodore Lenoir as their starting CB duo. They would've been happy to take Emmanuel Moseley back as depth coming off the ACL, but that would've required a lower price.SF must still add at the position

@LombardiHimselfCenter stability: huge deal for Shanahan. That's why 49ers have spent significant money on Weston Richburg, Alex Mack and now Jake Brendel. We've seen matters get ugly when the 49ers haven't had a quality center see the 2020 injury mess. Brendel helped SF avoid that post-Mack
