Biggest takeaways, injury updates from 49ers’ second 2026 OTA practice

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers opened their second practice of OTAs to the media for a nearly 90-minute session on the field. After practice, Kyle Shanahan said that all 49ers’ players reported for the optional work except for left tackle Trent Williams, who is expected to attend next week. The head coach added that free-agent acquisition Mike Evans was absent for the day to attend to family matters in Texas.

Most of the team’s star players did not practice on Thursday, except for quarterback Brock Purdy, who took a typical amount of team reps. Backup quarterback Mac Jones, who is dealing with some shoulder soreness, went through warmups but did not take part in team drills.

Running back Christian McCaffrey, who said after practice that he participated in Wednesday’s on-field session, was seen in the weight room, and then later observed practice from the sidelines. With the All-Pro not taking part in team drills, and Isaac Guerendo sidelined with a torn pectoral muscle, most of the running back reps were split between Jordan James and rookie Kaelon Black.
