The San Francisco 49ers managed to overcome the loss of their starting quarterback, Trey Lance, in Sunday's 27-7 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Jimmy Garoppolo, who was re-signed to a restructured one-year deal before the start of the season, replaced the second-year quarterback.

The early news coming out of Santa Clara on Lance's status hasn't been good. The quarterback was ruled out due to an ankle injury. The news got worse when ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Lance is expected to undergo surgery, likely ending his 2022 campaign.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed Schefter's report after the game, sharing that Lance suffered a broken ankle and will undergo season-ending surgery on Monday morning.

"He's doing as good as you can," Shanahan said. "When I went out and saw him, he was just asking me about a couple of the plays before, about some of his reads and stuff. That's the type of kid he is, and I'm hurting for him."

Shanahan added, "We were really hoping to see a lot of him this year, so to have that bad of an injury where you can't come back from it, we feel for him. But if anyone can do it, it's him."

Shanahan was asked about the play, and if he has any regrets about calling it.

"Any time a guy gets hurt, I wish I didn't call that," the coach shared. "But no, that's something we were going to do, and something we would continue to do. It's a football play we believe in, and something that gives him a chance to be real successful in the league."

Shanahan was asked again about the play call decision. After all, the 49ers had been running the football well up to that point. Was that the best call in that situation, on 2nd-and-8?

"Would it have been better if it was 2nd-and-4?" Shanahan responded to the reporter asking the question. "Is that what you're implying? ... There's a few options on the play. It could have been a handoff. The D-end went up the play. It's the exact same play we ran three plays before that where Deebo [Samuel] got a 52-yarder. So there's a lot of stuff that goes into it."

Shanahan added, "It's a pretty normal play [around the league]. It's part of football, and it's unfortunately he hurt his ankle on it. But it's a very normal play. You guys should watch some other [teams]."

That means it will be Garoppolo at quarterback moving forward. He finished the game 13-of-21 for 154 yards, a touchdown, and a passer rating of 100.1. Garoppolo also had a rushing touchdown late in the game.

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw is currently rehabilitating after undergoing surgery for the torn Achilles he sustained last month during Super Bowl 58. He'll have a partner in his recovery, as he wasn't the only member of the team to suffer that specific injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters on Tuesday morning at the NFL owners meetings and revealed that defensive backs coach Daniel Bullocks also sustained a torn Achilles during the game. "[It occurred] about five minutes after Dre's," Shanahan told reporters. "I think it was when [S] Ji'Ayir [Brown] got the interception, he just jumped up and cheered, very similar to Dre's, and his Achilles went too." Bullocks remained on the sideline and continued coaching throughout the

Super Bowl-winning head coach Andy Reid of the Kansas City Chiefs witnessed all he needed from Brock Purdy last season to assure him that the San Francisco 49ers are in capable hands at the quarterback position. Purdy was an MVP nominee in 2023 and had his 49ers just a play or two away from clinching a Super Bowl victory away from the Chiefs. Unfortunately, for Purdy and the 49ers, Reid and his own quarterback, Patrick Mahomes, widely regarded as the best in the game today, dashed their Super Bowl dreams in overtime last month. According to NBC Sports Bay Area, speaking at the NFL owners meetings on Monday, Reid stated, "Yeah, I

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers hope to keep Brandon Aiyuk, Brock Purdy together

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

Last week, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan ran into his wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk, while on vacation in Cabo San Lucas. "He was randomly at our hotel. I don't think he wanted to be," the coach shared on Tuesday while speaking to reporters at the NFL owners meetings. The 49ers are currently negotiating a long-term extension with Aiyuk to ensure he remains with the team for the foreseeable future. However, with it only being March, it's challenging to predict how everything will unfold. Typically, under the leadership of Shanahan and general manager John Lynch, the 49ers have reached agreements with their star players closer to training camp in July. Lynch stated yesterday that the

Kyle Shanahan explains why 49ers promoted Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator

By David Bonilla
Mar 26

After Steve Wilks's dismissal, the San Francisco 49ers had several options for their vacant defensive coordinator position. Although former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley was considered for the role, he ultimately joined the coaching staff as the assistant head coach under head coach Kyle Shanahan. He will focus on game plan preparations while offering his experience to the team. Nick Sorensen, the team's defensive pass game specialist, was awarded the defensive coordinator position. Shanahan opted for an internal candidate, valuing Sorensen's familiarity with the staff and the defensive system. When asked what qualities Sorensen demonstrated to prove he's ready to call plays for the defense, Shanahan explained, "He's worked with a lot of people
