The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 1 contest against the Detroit Lions on Sunday at Ford Field in Detroit, Michigan.
The 49ers added another practice squad protection today. Cornerback Dontae Johnson joins quarterback Nate Sudfeld and wide receiver Travis Benjamin. None of the three can be signed by another team until after Sunday's game.
Quarterback Trey Lance's status for this weekend remains unclear. He suffered a chipped bone in the index finger of his throwing hand on August 29. Lance was limited during practice but could throw the football—something he has been unable to do since the injury.
It's progress.
"We'll see how practice goes today," Shanahan responded after being asked about the rookie's availability against the Lions. "We haven't been able to do anything live yet. I mean, he can do it on air, but that will be decided off of Wednesday, Thursday, Friday."
Shanahan said that wide receiver Jalen Hurd was a candidate for injured reserve. The third-year player has yet to play in a regular-season game during his NFL career and is returning from a torn ACL suffered before last season.
Cornerback Emmanuel Moseley's and defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw's statuses are worth keeping an eye on as the week progresses.
Below are Wednesday's practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Lions, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff.

"Thank God for Mr. Irrelevant": John Lynch reflects on 49ers drafting Trey Lance
The decision to trade up in the 2021 NFL Draft and select quarterback Trey Lance could have had significant consequences for general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan. With the team lacking first-round picks in the last two drafts due to this move, and Lance no longer on the roster after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys before last season, it's clear the gamble didn't unfold as expected.
Lynch held his annual pre-draft press conference on Monday, reflecting on the decision to take such a big chance on Lance. While such a bold move might have jeopardized jobs elsewhere, Lynch and Shanahan were blessed with some good fortune in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Acknowledging the support of the team's ownership, Lynch stated, "They believe in Kyle and I, and our

Brandon Aiyuk's agent denies report of Steelers 'aggressively pursuing' the 49ers receiver
On Wednesday, Chat Sports contributor Chase Senior reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers were "aggressively pursuing" San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. He further stated that the Steelers are confident they can finalize a deal for the star player.
REPORTS: The Pittsburgh Steelers are aggressively pursuing a Brandon Aiyuk trade and the Steelers would be "surprised" if they don't land Aiyuk. Of note: Pittsburgh has the 20th overall pick. The Niners could look at that as equal value for Aiyuk if they can't get a deal done.…
49ers sign WR Trent Taylor, reuniting with former draft pick
The San Francisco 49ers announced the signing of wide receiver Trent Taylor to a one-year deal, reuniting with the team's former fifth-round draft pick out of Louisiana Tech.
Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area was the first to report that the 49ers were discussing a potential reunion with Taylor. The receiver was part of head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's first draft class in 2017 and spent his first four NFL seasons with the team.
