The San Francisco 49ers looked into the possibility of adding
Tom Brady last offseason. Who knows how the season might have unfolded had they pursued the future Hall of Fame quarterback? It's doubtful Brady would have been able to single-handedly change the team's injury misfortunes.
San Francisco was
reportedly Brady's top choice for a landing spot last year. The quarterback signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and went on to win yet another Super Bowl. San Francisco opted to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo, who missed 10 games last season. The 49ers finished 6-10.
Brady was a possibility to replace Garoppolo last year. This year, the 49ers have a succession plan after trading up to draft Trey Lance at No. 3 overall. HBO shared a promo for an episode of
The Shop: Uninterrupted. Brady has the following to say about one of the interested NFL teams that he spoke with last offseason.
Said Brady: "One of the teams, they weren't interested at the very end. I was thinking,
you're sticking with that motherf--ker?"
We learned of the promo from
Pro Football Talk. Brady doesn't name the team in the promo itself, but Mike Florio wonders if Brady might be referring to San Francisco and quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. Perhaps. It seems like a logical connection. Although, Garoppolo has said that he and Brady continue to have a good relationship. If true, it seems odd that Brady would have referred to the 49ers quarterback like that. But you never know.
We may never find out for sure which team Brady was referring to, though.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan said last offseason that he and general manager John Lynch looked into the possibility of adding Brady, but in the end, decided it wasn't the best long-term move for the franchise.
"Once we realized and heard this could be realistic, this isn't just talk, we looked into it all, especially with the respect we have for Tom and everything, and how great of a player he is,"
Shanahan said last year. "We looked into it to try to see if it would be better for our team this year and in the future. When we weighed it all together, we didn't think it would."

Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk
San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history.
A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy.
Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end.
"I
NFL insider states the obvious regarding 49ers' talks with Brandon Aiyuk
ESPN insider Adam Schefter recently shared his insights on the situation surrounding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk during an appearance on the network's "NFL Live" show. Schefter clarified that while Aiyuk would like to remain with the 49ers, his priority is securing a contract that reflects his value, regardless of the team.
When questioned about Aiyuk's desire to stay with the team that selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Schefter responded, "Well, I think his desire to get paid is greater than his desire to stay in San Francisco, wherever that is. If the 49ers want to pay him, I'm sure he'd love to stay in San Francisco. If another team would like to pay him, I'm sure he'd like to go
49ers' Brock Purdy addresses young fan's question about scripted NFL
Taylor Swift, the Kansas City Chiefs, and a Super Bowl overtime matchup. If the NFL is scripted, the league came up with a good one this past season—unless you're a San Francisco 49ers fan.
During his inaugural youth football camp at Levi's Stadium this past weekend, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy faced a candid inquiry from one young participant: Is the NFL scripted?
"No, the NFL is not scripted," a smiling Purdy responded. However, the quarterback added, "Good
Insiders identify late risers who 49ers could target in NFL Draft
With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, ESPN contributors have highlighted some prospects who have seen their draft stock rise throughout the evaluation process. Jordan Reid and Matt Miller pinpointed players who could hear their names called at the end of the first round.
Interestingly, both of the prospects identified by Reid and Miller play in the trenches but on different sides of the ball. The San Francisco 49ers are widely expected to draft an offensive lineman with their first selection—No. 31 overall. The team mostly ignored the group in free agency. However, it wouldn't surprise many people if the
