The San Francisco 49ers traded defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts last offseason in exchange for a first-round pick. Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reports that Buckner wasn't the only 49ers player discussed as part of the trade. Apparently, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo's name was "briefly" discussed during the talks.

Obviously, nothing materialized from that aspect of the discussions, and Garoppolo went on to be the team's Week 1 starter.

"The [Colts] went with a Band-Aid last year, in Rivers, after taking a shot with Jacoby Brissett in 2019 (and that was after Jimmy Garoppolo's name briefly came up in the DeForest Buckner trade talks with San Francisco)," wrote Breer.

It's just an interesting footnote for an offseason that also included the 49ers — again, briefly — flirting with the idea of replacing Garoppolo with future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. And Garoppolo's future with the team is again a topic of discussion this offseason, with many in the media wondering if Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch might be tempted by a name like Matthew Stafford or Deshaun Watson.

Garoppolo completed 67.1 percent of his passes for 1,096 yards, seven touchdowns, and five interceptions in six starts this past season. He missed 10 games due to hamstring injuries and has missed the majority of two of the past three seasons. However, Garoppolo helped the 49ers reach the Super Bowl during that healthy season in 2019, his first as a 16-game starter.

H/t to Akash Anavarathan of Fourth and Nine for the find.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter recently shared his insights on the situation surrounding San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk during an appearance on the network's "NFL Live" show. Schefter clarified that while Aiyuk would like to remain with the 49ers, his priority is securing a contract that reflects his value, regardless of the team. When questioned about Aiyuk's desire to stay with the team that selected him in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Schefter responded, "Well, I think his desire to get paid is greater than his desire to stay in San Francisco, wherever that is. If the 49ers want to pay him, I'm sure he'd love to stay in San Francisco. If another team would like to pay him, I'm sure he'd like to go

Brock Purdy set a San Francisco 49ers single-season record in 2023, throwing for 4,280 passing yards. Many of those yards came on passes to his top target, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a team-leading and career-high 1,342 receiving yards. Purdy and Aiyuk have developed great chemistry on the football field, and the quarterback would like to build upon that for years to come. However, that is out of his control, and Aiyuk's future is in the hands of the front office.
