Got up early to watch this, spent a lot of time listening because it was too tense...
So happy for Messi.

Could not watch the game in its entirety except for the penalty kicks. I kept seeing the score change on my phone towards the end and was thinking this is nuts. What a game!

…and 48 teams instead of 32 teams. Mega World Cup.

Just confirms my theory that Messi is overrated as hell
How is that
I've always been a Ronaldo guy. Messi is pint sized and wilts in big moments.

All time?
To me that's still a great debate. Messi > Cr7 though
I still go with Pele and R9
Can't argue with Pele. He was special and he won three WCs. For me it could be either player. Having said that, i have never seen any player with such a field vision an awareness as Messi.
Brazil won one without him. He was injured and hardly played in the middle of his prime and Brazil won. Garrincha led that team to the WC.
Did you watch 1970's final vs Italy. I did, Pele was the difference maker.
I didn't. Just saying - Brazil won 62 World Cup while Pele was hurt. Brazilians were loaded with talent. Pele is one of the greatest players of all time - of course he should be the difference maker.
So you didn't watch.

Nope - didn't watch Pele win the cup for Brazil in 1962. Also didn't watch Jimmy Garoppolo win two Superbowls but I guess some ppl did.

That's good list and it doesn't really matter the order - it just comes down to preference.
Do think it's unfair to punish Cristiano for not winning WC. I'm no fan of his but respect the hell out of his game & individual dominance. Give him Ronaldo's or Pele's Brazil or Zidane's or Mbappe's French team in his prime and I bet he wins a WC too.
For me - Messi was GOAT before this WC but this WC eliminates any real argument from ppl who value winning WC way too much. Higuain missing several easy chances in 2014 WC doesn't determine the legacy of Messi.
…and it pains me to have 3 players from Real Madrid in my top 5 - players whom I've rooted against all my life - and hated them but theyre among the 5 best players I have watched - who not only played international football at a ridiculous level but also club football at the highest level in Europe.
My top 5 based on players I've watched:
Tier 1 Messi
Tier 2 Diego & Cristiano
Tier 3 Zidane & Ronaldo

This is a good post. Let me start by saying that Messi is also my all time favorite player. I've never seen any player with such field vision. For me, he is the Montana of soccer. I am also old enough to witness Pele's greatness. He was the Messi of his time. He truly changed the game and globalized soccer. As for CR, I agree with you, it's not fair to punish him for not winning the WC. That's total BS. CR is a great player and demands all the respect.
My Top 6:
Tier 1 Messi, Pele
Tier 2 Maradona, Cruyff
Tier 3 CR, Beckenbauer
I had to get Der kaiser in there, so I have six players as my top players.
