Harrison has done well with the Brewers but who can say if that would have happened if he stayed in SF. The Giants have a way of letting talented players fail.

Boston is the real loser here. They lost their best hitter and then let Harrison and Tibbs go.
Simple statement "money wasn't an issue" can be manipulatively claimed as true AND absolutely meaningless at the same time, without much further elaboration and many unspoken details they will never, ever delve into the slightest. Practically opening the books that would have exposed it for what it really and truly is or means.

I do agree on the Devers trade. At that time, looking at where the Giants were, Devers perception as a player and what they gave up for him as their usefulness for the team, was a no brainer. It's like the Warriors trading for Yanis and he suddenly averaging 5pts a game over the season. Extremely unpredictable event.

Basically, Giants ownership group idea of "money is not an issue" is very simple to calculate
Existing payroll minus outgoing contract plus renewed / new contracts = budget line. With established budget line is the only known element in time and once established, dictating renewed / knew contracts. The general manager than decided how and on who he spends that newly available money. That very formula had existed since Sabean years. And what this formula means is when you can simultaneously come up with Baumgarner, Caine and Lincicome and Posey, Craw, Panda, Belt and few others from your minor system at the same time, what that can accomplish. All Sabean needed was the quality relief pitching, that is it. Plus, that was when the rest of the NL West was in the toilet (especially the Dodgers) practically guaranteeing the Giants the division title before the start of the season, with their pitching and D strength is precisely what was needed and what was winning the playoffs back then. And on the heels of Bonds era that entertained the Giants fans for almost the dozens of years to boot.

open for debate, my 2 cents, devers is overrated even at the time. this was never a judge or ohtani. i don't think devers got top 10 in mvp in his own league, let alone mlb,
meanwhile gianis is 2x mvp, so i don't see that comp

raffy does very little well, he's terrible baserunning, he's very bad in the field, and it was known at the time of the trade that he was quitting or refusing to play certain roles in boston, they wanted him out the door badly, so i find that aspect predictable that he's a bad attitude over there and here. his 'apology' was hilarious he said effectively this is why i don't talk to media cuz you all suck, in other words, even in his apology he can't restrain his obvious anger and frustration, imagining working with this toddler and he makes more than you and everyone, totally tanks morale,

His fielding is fine at first base. He's not great but not bad either. As for not being Judge or Ohtani, who is? My point was at the time of the trade it was considered a good deal for the Giants. Boston quickly unloaded the 2 picks so thye didn't think much of those guys either.

Whether the Giants spent more for bigger names isn't necessarily the issue. Five of the top 10 payrolls are under .500 with 2 in last place in their divisions so money doesn't guarantee a good team. You still need the right players and coaching staff to make it all work. That's the problem the Giants made. They don't have the right mix. They concentrated on gettng more hitting. That's okay but you can't ignore the pitching while doing it. You can't just be one or the other. The minor league system hasn't been able to plug the holes that were left in the off season so we have another failed team.
Susac going on IL again smh.
This team is the worst Giants team I've ever watched with my eyes. Granted, only about 30 years of watching sports, give or take. But in terms of being bad both on the field and off the field, this one takes the cake. What a freaking sh!tshow. I'm not even sure Eldridge becoming a superstar like Aaron Judge would fix this squad, thats how deep it runs imo.

I've seen worse but this one is in the bottom 10 for sure. They just always seem to find a way to lose. Last night they had bases loaded with one out and couldn't score. Next inning they had 2nd and 3rd with one out and couldn't score. Still making mistakes on the basepaths. Pitchers issueing too many walks. Always something.

The 2005 team was brutal. A bunch of washed up mediocre vets and AAA guys with no upside.

The 2017 team lost 98 games.

SMFH.
Ramos is back now so it will be interesting to see what they do. Will they try and trade one of the outfielders? Will they start platooning Ramos and Eldridge at DH? I hope they trade Ramos. He may be the most tradeable player because of his age and contract. He's playing on a one year $810,000 deal and is scheduled for arbitration next season. He wouldn't cost any team very much since he isn't likely to get a lot in arbitration.
