The hitting might be underperforming, but this pitching staff is horrendous. Not sure why we expected to run out this staff and get by. Especially after trading away the catcher who was making them look better than they were.
It's not the hitting. They're 5th in the league and 1st in doubles. The problem has been timely hitting. They have the fewest walks of any team by a wide margin. Combine that with stranding too many on base and you see what we have.
The pitching has been so bad that I wasn't comfortable at all with a one run lead last night. I was worried that Logan Webb's first good outing this season was going to go to waste.
I hate to break this for you but timely hitting, drawing walks, and getting on base IS hitting. When you are 28th out of 30 teams in scoring that IS hitting - or lack thereof. Batting average and doubles are completely useless if they dont plate runners.
The Giants are terrible at the plate and on the mound. And that is why only the Rockies have a worse record in the NL.
What you refer to as hitting is actually plate appearances. It only becomes hitting when the ball is put in play which is why walks aren't counted as a PA. They go into the OBP category. We agree that their plate appearances (OBP) sucks. So does the base running. The pitching is completely unpredictable. We see an occasional good outing but most are disappointing. Starters unable to go 5 innings and relievers that can't throw strikes.
I compared last season's stats to this year. They were nearly reversed. They drew more walks in 2025 but had fewer hits. Is it because of the new batting coach? In the end it's not about getting base runners. It's what they do when they get them on whether it's with a hit or a walk. Dead last in stolen bases doesn't help. They have some team speed but they don't steal bases well. Are they not being taught how? Do they spend any time studying pitchers moves?
