Just fire it past the batter? You can't just throw it past a decent hitter. They can all hit 100mph pitches if they aren't located well. Pitchers need to be able to throw off speed stuff to keep them off balance. That's been one of Doval's issues this season. His control hasn't been as sharp. He's hanging sliders and grooving fastballs. They've had to use him in non save situations to avoid long stretches of inactivity.

He throws 100 with movement. And I am not suggesting he ONLY throws his fastball. And I actually misspoke, but it actually makes my complaint even stronger. It was a three ONE slider. And this was after he already threw 2 sliders in the at bat that missed the strike zone.

Him being in the game with an 11 run lead in and of itself is a joke. Should absolutely never happen.

He should have thrown more fastballs. He hadn't pitched in days but they start a series with the cubs today so he shouldn't have pitched yesterday. If he needed to throw, do a bullpen so he's good for tonight. If they need him tonight and he's unavailable that will really piss me off. Because last time that happened Rodgers blew a save. Every win matters to a fringe team.

f**king stupid of Melvin.

I know they used him because he hadn't pitched for a few days. Closers seem to be better when they get a lot of work. Anyway, I trust Melvin's opinion more than yours or mine. He's got a little more experience in the big leagues than we do.

The giants and Melvin aren't free of criticism. What success have you seen that shows we need to trust everything they do? That's silly.

last time Melvin did this he was unavailable the next day and Rodgers blew a save and they lost. You trying to tell me I'm too stupid to think that's stupid?

lmao

If we arent allowed to criticize a manager because we have never managed a big league game, then why should we even discuss anything on a sports board?

I'm not saying we can't criticize. I just said they have more experience than we do. They know the best and the worst of their personnel. They know who's feeling god or bad on any given day. That's why I give them the benefit of the doubt. They don't make the right decision every time but going back and criticizing them after the fact is silly. They can't do that. They have to make a decision based on their instinct and knowledge.

Everyone could be a big league manager or NFL coach if they were allowed a do over every time a decision went bad.

I was criticizing Melvin when Doval was warming up yesterday. Has absolutely nothing to do with hindsight.
Only positive stuff in the thread from now on. The giants never do anything wrong. I'll start:

Casali is the second best catcher in all of baseball behind Bailey!

Okay but most of the criticism comes from hindsight. If Doval had shut them down 1-2-3 would you be calling it a dumb move or would you understand why he used him? I'm not just talking about just this incident or anyone in particular. All fans love to complain and criticize. I get that but too many of them make it sound like they know more than the coaches. That's total BS and you know it. None of us knows more about the team or the individuals on it than they do. I just hate it when fans call the coaches idiots or worse when things don't go right. I feel the same about calling players garbage or ass. They may not be good enough but if they made it to the big leagues in the first place they're better than we are.

I complain about the front office all the time and their failure to develop good outfielders since 1977. That doesn't mean they're idiots or incompetent. It just means they might have to look at the way they're scouting or the way they're teaching them in the lower levels.

Obviously when people call players garbage, its relative to their peers. I get that the worst Major Leaguer is better than any fan. I will continue to call garbage Major Leaguers garbage, regardless of the fact that they are better than I am.

Back to your original question, if Doval had shut them down 1-2-3, I would still question the need to bring our closer in with an eleven run lead. He can get work in the bullpen if he needs work. With no off day between yesterday's game and our next series, I'd rather he rest than pitch in a game.
Someone check ump auditor later. This ump is awful tonight
I am ok with platooning based on matchups if the two players in the platoon are Major League quality players.

What I am not ok with is sitting Wilmer because a righty is on the mound, if the alternative is a minor leaguer who has no business in a starting Major League lineup.
