My issue isn't that Matos got sent down, although I don't agree with doing it...its that he got sent down for Slater. Slater isn't good. If they had to do it to bring back Conforto, fine. Although Conforto is like 0 for his last 12 and we are talking about Matos' slump. Slumps happen. Its part of the game. Matos played in 76 games last year and was ehhh. But in 21 games this year he was starting to show fire and pop. And him and Ramos were a big part of the giants finally playing good baseball in the midst of all them injuries. You let a player work through that s**t unless you don't have a spot. Matos earned more time to work through that. Slater hasn't earned that spot in 26 games this year. He's not a good defender, and he's hitting .140. He's a good pinch hitting option if you have room for him. That's it.
Sometimes you have to show some faith to your young players and let the extremely average ones go. Slater is not winning games.
I was hoping they would release Slater when he came bck. I thunk they want Matos to play every day so that's why they sent him back to AAA. With Conforto, Yaz and Ramos starting most games he would be playing mostly when they faced a left hander. Under that scenario he could sometimes go for a few days without starting. Young players like him and Luciano need to play every day to develop a good stroke and rhythm. I think both are ging to be future solid players for yers so let them develop.
By the way, I'm listening to KNBR as I type this and they just said Will Clark isn't happy about the Slater for Matos thing either.
