It was a Saturday and there were only 3 channels at that time. He tuned in the MLB game of the week. I didn't know anything about baseball yet but I remember hearing the name Willie Mays when he came to the plate. It stuck out to me because it had a magical sond toit.Maybe because I didn't know anyone named Willie. Whatever the reason he became one of my favorite players along with Mantle.
Years later I had the pleasure of sitting in Willie's private box a few times at Candlestick. Meeting him was one of the greatest thrills I ever had.
Happy birthday Willie.
Good story! Great event too! The fact that you remember this event like it took place the day before says a lot too. I was fortunate enough to take part in a similar event.
I was a young news and sports reporter. The Fresno Giants hosted a special event for media. Both Willie Mays and Willie McCovey were in town for some reason that I cannot remember. But, as a reporter, I was given the opportunity to sit in the Fresno Giants dugout with both men and ask them as many questions as I wanted. And I did. I still have tape of those interviews. The event was decades ago. But I will never forget the experience.
Another memory that has stayed with me through the years is meeting Bill Thompson for the first time. The former SF Giants radio announcer had graduated to the position of GM for the Fresno Giants by the time I met him. I'll never forget his warm greeting to me when I entered the Euless Park press box for the first time. He took one long look at me, with my radio tape deck and microphone in hand, and uttered the following line of pure warmth: "WHO THE F**K ARE YOU?!" That was Bill Thompson. A man of real warmth and color.
I could write a book about that Fresno Giants season. It was the same year that Will Clark arrived and stayed for a cup of coffee in Fresno before moving on up.

I was only about 4 or 5 when I heard the name Willie Mays. I knew very little about baseball yet. The Giants were still in NY. It was 1951 or 1952. We're all very impressionable at that age so the name stuck with me. I wanted to tell the story to Willie when I sat in his box but I didn't get a chance. I was sitting up front and he sat in the back like he always did talking golf with friends. I got a windbreaker that he had made for the Willie Mays statue dedication. It still fits.

Wall scraping flyballs are crushed now?
Heliot Ramos is not a Major Leaguer, and his time regarded as a prospect is running out.

Chapman swings and misses at everything. If he plays the whole year like this, he's gonna set the giants record for most strikeouts.
he's absolutely awful

Soon as they all get healthy trade them all away for bats, this is ridiculous. Black looked good for a short time

i just don't know what they were doing having all these rotation pieces questionable or out to start
, so they needed more pitching, most important criteria, is not named Daulton J, nor D Jefferies..
