They have a MUCH better pitching staff, much improved defense, and I think a better hitting lineup.

This is easily an A+ off season unless you believed there was actually a chance Ohtani and Yamamoto would come to the Giants.
At the time the article came out, a D was a fair grade. It was an article, not coming from our mouths anyway.
In spite of the lack of getting a true star, it was a pretty damn good offseason. Still a lot of question marks, but almost as good of an offseason as we could have hoped for.
So talk to the author and not us in here.
Farhan had every reason to be ripped prior to the conclusion of this offseason. I don't know why that's hard for you to acknowledge. He had a very good offseason. Now let's see it all come together.
My "ripping of Farhan" this in the middle of this offseason has more to do with his overall tenure than this specific offseason. I dont know why THAT is a hard concept for you. Even after the offseason he has had, he still needs to earn the benefit of the doubt of being able to build this team up. Good start, but time will tell.
Another thing, John.
Farhan essentially announced that we were done signing free agents after we signed Soler. Then we signed Chapman. Then he stated again that we were done signing free agents. Then we signed Snell.
One of the many problems I have had with Farhan during his tenure is saying one thing publicly and then him failing to live up to what he said. Granted this time it went the opposite (in a good way). So when I "ripped" Farhan (which is a bit harsh wording but ok), not only was I doing so based on his entire tenure, but also taking him at his word that we were done with free agent signings.

Right, because he isnt very good. Its funny to me how you get hyped on some prospects and totally turned off by others. In no universe is Casey Schmitt better than Luciano.

Trying to think of what he told the fans that he didnt do. Ohtani? Judge? He went after them hard but they were never going anywhere other than NY and LA. We also dont know what his limits are. Obviously ownership has the final say when it comes to spending 700m on one player

I think Farhan would be better off not saying anything other than we're looking at options or something like that. Making bold statements and then failing to deliver isn't good PR. Better to surprise.

I have no issue with you "ripping" Farhan as I could be accused of doing the same. Although I don't think I commented on that dumb offseason grade thing. You cannot just evaluate one year, its his entire tenure. If you look at what he has done across multiple years, it leaves a lot to be desired. And I also have issue with how he structures contracts, and how he values some players for their versatility but really they are just below average players who can play in multiple positions.
And you can also reasonably assume he was pressured into this year with the fans reactions in buying tix and across SM platforms. A few in this thread are far from the collective voice of displeasure that you can read on almost every giants SM site. And with this years FAs (outside Lee) mostly all on short term contracts, you can also see where the giants will be back in the same situation next year.
But he definitely improved the team and gave Melvin a shot at being competitive. It takes a lot of things to go right, including luck, to be there after 162 games.

Schmitt is infinitely better defensively over Luciano, so not sure exactly what you're talking about. Did you forget there is offense and defense in baseball?
If Luciano can stay healthy for an entire season maybe he can prove you right.

I agree. But during this particular phase, he was saying what he said to help calm the market for Chapman and Snell. Which I think worked.

Offensive ability is far more important than defense. Thats why you don't see anyone trading guys like Francisco Lindor for Andrelton Simmons.

Now that is a comparison. Luciano is not in the same universe as Francisco Lindor, a multi-time AS/SS/GG Winner, Lindor is infinitely better in all aspects.
Defense being less important .... At shortstop, I would argue that is not the case. At minimum, they are equal. But I think defense is more important for SS, albeit, they are still both important.

the whole SS discussion now is dumb because the team decided 99 was correct when they made that transaction. Clearly.

Well said and I totally agree. If John believes me being negative about Farhan halfway through the offseason was only about THIS offseason, then he is wrong. It was never about that.
Great post RN.
