You can't become an NFL cornerback in 8 months. "It takes at least 20 years..." What is this dudes special skillset?

Honestly, no idea. Afl is a very unusual game that doesn't quite fit into any other football category. But they're all tall and fast and incredibly fit. (edit: they run something like 10 miles per game)

Yes domestically bigger than the NRL, internationally...whats that?..oh, road rules for kangaroos?

Kelly's interview stating his intent to review all the players on past season/s filmage, giving him an idea on each individuals capabilities but has also reinforced that watching players on the field will give him an exact idea, this is when hayne has to show up.

I've thought for a while now you could find some serious DB talent in AFL Defenders.

Insane stamina, good speed, tackling and jumping ability and tons of experience in what is essentially zone defense, man marking, breaking up passes and making interceptions.

Big question is putting it all together, becoming more explosive and learning all the tricks and traps of various plays and routes.

I'm surprised it's Cornerback actually. I would have thought Free Safety would have been a bit more suited to the position. (more open field zone and reactive rather than rigidly sticking to a man or route)

It's a TON of pressure to put on a newb though. Running Back screws up and chances are you just don't get a first down. CB or FS blows coverage and you lose the game.

So there are two places where this story would get the most attention:

The AZ Cardinals thread (NFL Talk) or the Hayne thread... Hayne thread was the easy choice as such a broad range of topics are covered here & it also gets its fair share of American traffic.

When Hayne first came to the 49ers & brought a lot of traffic here to this site. There were Rugby Union/League threads galore littering the Other Sports section, but everybody has done a good job since tidying it up by putting the majority of the League or Union content into general discussion threads.

(So we learn fast & are quite a thoughtful bunch )

Agree, I love the sport & want to see it grow as strong as possible... The more International exposure football gets the better it is for the long term health of the game. I find it really cool that quality athletes from other countries genuinely catch the American Football bug & desire to come over & try their luck.

They would be alright for punting but a Rugby or Rugby league play would have a much better skill set for the simple reason the of the way offensive and defensive lines occur and face off each other and the manner of tackling. AFL I think is closer to soccer or even basket ball in a sense then they are to the Rugby/NFL style.

Agreed CB is one of the toughest positions to play in the NFL... He is a long shot at best, but good on him for giving it a go... Nobody has anything to lose in this situation, so what can it hurt?

What I find even weirder is Aussie casual fan's relationship with Rugby Union. Cricket has been around the top then AFL then NRL after it but Rugby Union only becomes relevant every 4 years when the World Cup comes by to support the Wallabies. One of the reasons Super Rugby doesn't work is the time zones from South Africa/NZ/Aus all happening at different times. If there's anything that NRL shares with NFL is that it knows how to put on a good when people want to watch it from Thursday right through to Monday Night Football. Add in the multibillion dollar TV deal and you have happy players + fans. I'm rambling on but you know what I mean. I'm seeing a lot of stuff marketing wise from the NFL creeping into league now.
