To think that a country with such a small population has such dominance on a worldwide sport is incredible....but I know why. It is way more than a sport to them. It is a legacy that has very deep meaning and is built on a strong foundation. We could learn a lot from them.
The 49ers and the NFL could learn a heck of lot from them too.......but they are already World Champions so are probably not interested.

49ers have been there Rabbits. They dominated the 80s & early 90s. They just need to find a way to get back.

Currently they'd be better off following the Raiders rebuild model... In the long run look to mimic the Patriots sustained success.

The All Blacks system wouldn't be much help as the method for acquiring talent is different.

49ers don't have access to a protected group of players that no one else can touch... The All Blacks do.

The All Blacks model works better for national teams, not club teams.

Awesome unbending mindset wins games

You've still got to have enough talent to compete though Neo.

Too true. The NFL is a very different beast. I can't imagine a punter or kicker buying in to a mantra that makes any difference to the way he plays as well as the reality that they are so structured and specialised and the coaches are active role players on the day that there is more "I" in the team than most other football codes. And so many are playing for a pay cheque rather than any affiliation to their employer.........they are a commodity.

Just like the difference between chasing a common vision (union) or running from the gun or you get fired (NFL) it may also point to why college gridiron is so well followed since the players are playing for an ideal and even the punter is an active participant in the teams vision.

There is more talk about the NFL losing ratings whereby college football is growing. There is a major disconnect that could one day come to a head. The NFL and their unbridled greed and hypocritical stance on social issues could come back to bite them.

The NFL want the Pacific Islanders but they are a tribal people and warm to Union and more recently League. Of course the money has already lured a decent amount to NFL but mostly the Hawaii college kids so far.

There has been talk of increasing the NFL roster to 80 players from the player union so it may open the door but it will be even less of a team with that many trying to see the field.

NFL is still top dog in America by a long shot... Its dominance is tough to comprehend by comparison to anything in OZ or NZ.

Down south & in the far west AFL dominates. RL dominates in NSW / QLD & in NZ it's RU.

The ratings may be down, but it is still kicking ass over everything else.

The ratings slump is a new thing, only this year. Recently (Years prior) the NFL had been breaking all kinds of ratings records.

It is also a unique year due to the Election & protesting of social issues.

However the key thing that has been noticeable this year & last has been the extremely poor quality of the primetime games. These are the games that are broadcast nationally in the States.

The other games in the Sunday block (Which have been of a much higher standard) are only broadcast to certain regions. They are also played at the same time.

I feel this is a huge contributor to the ratings slump.

Also our sports aren't immune to drops in ratings or crowd figures. AFL & RL have experienced abysmal crowd numbers at times recently & RU in OZ & a number of other places is struggling both in the crowd & TV figures department.

Once again the quality of the on field product the OZ Super Rugby teams & the Wallabies have produced recently has seen rugby in the country hit an all time low.

This is where the NFL is failing in PT.

As for PI's there have been plenty who have succeeded in the NFL... Recently the late Junior Seau became the first Polynesian to be inducted into the PFBHOF & in a few years time Troy Polamalu will become the second. Marcus Mariota also became the first Polynesian to win the Hesiman Trophy (College football's top prize) two years ago.

As usual a font of sports knowledge. Are you a sports writer or an extremely dedicated sports follower?

I would agree that the scheduling of the Thursday and Monday prime time games have been pretty boring.

Union at a club level has been poorly followed in Aus which has always baffled me since the national or state game is attended by masses of people.

... No Rabbits, you're making me blush.

American Football & Rugby Union are just my two favourite sports... If we were talking about Motorsport or Cricket in detail, I've got nothing.

I've just been trying to be the voice of reason as everyone hits the panic button over the ratings. If 3 years from now the trend continues? Then it might be time to worry.

Also you mentioned it Rabbits, college football's ratings are on the up, well CFB & the NFL are the same sport. Which indicates the interest in AF overall isn't fading (Positive news ). Rather there seems to be some frustration with aspects of the pro game, which can always be rectified.

A good blend is needed
My point is that a team of workers can an overcome some obstacles that a lazy gifted team may struggle with

True Neo... Gotta wear the jersey with pride & lay it all on the line every time you step on the field.

I agree with Rabbits to the extent that what you write about Union, League and NFL is verging on professional. Please keep up the excellent and informative posts.
And nice work Sports on NFL pickem. You are a lot more consistent than me. I also saw Locky there too.

Back to Rugger... looks like Koriebete will get a wallaby Guernsey straight up.

I'm doing alright so far, Rabbits... Tbh the NFL is one of the harder sports leagues to tip... A lot more games & unpredictable results.

I have mixed feelings about Koroibete's early selection.

On the positive side... The Wallabies certainly need to develop bench depth & the end of year tour is always a good place to do just that. Usually you take somebody who is on the periphery of making the team or a promising young talent. Koroibete if he is committed long term? Would fit the bill.

On the negative side... It would be better if he had actually played some lower level rugby union this year, before being selected.

After 111 years of trying, they've finally done it...

Congratulations Ireland on a marvellous & historic victory.

Wow is that the first time they have beaten the All Blacks?

Yeah it is, Goatie.

Closest they've ever come to victory was a couple of draws.

An Irish victory in front of a packed Soldier Field in Chicago, days after the Chicago Cubs broke an 108 year World Series drought, is a helluva way for them to break the 111 year duck.

The only downside was the game wasn't broadcast here in OZ on either regular or subscription TV. So Aussie rugby fans / sports enthusiasts missed an historic occasion.

Up your game Foxtel.

Don't get me started on Foxtel.

I sure hope the 49ers don't take 111 years to win their next game
