2014-15 Los Angeles Lakers Thread

That article is one the most if not the most biased self serving agenda filled Kobe bashing article I have ever seen. Any real Laker fan knows that Kobe as great as he is can and probalbly is an asswhole.

To say that he is single handedly destroying the Lakers is ridiculous. Seriously though Ramon Sessions, Smush Parker and the infamous anonymous sources good lord. Smush Parkers best season was with the Lakers what did he do before and after that. So much speculation and Hyperbole in that artice.

At this point in Kobe's career, and with where the Lakers are with OG Buss gone, is it fair to say Kobe is doing more harm than good? It seems like big time FA don't wanna play with Kobe now cause it isn't worth it. He is bigger than the rest of the team and everyone knows that.

Again, I think this is a blessing in disguise for the Lakers. Don't lock yourselves up with some big contracts for the likes of Chris Bosh types. For what? That won't get you a ring.... and in a couple of years you guys will have a lot of flexibility to make some huge moves.

It'll just be hard for some fans to endure being s**tty for a couple of years. Lakers fans aren't used to it. Kings fans like me and Marsh are used to being s**tty so it don't phase us lol.

I think there's a good degree of misattribution in the piece. FAs don't want to play for the Lakers right now. Why? Because the cupboard is bare. Take Kobe completely out of the picture, along with the cap space that he's occupying. Why would a FA come here? Who would they be playing with? Why would say, Marc Gasol & Rajon Rondo (for example) want to join forces in LA while being surrounded by middling talent, when they could join established cores where they could put them over the top?

As for the dishonesty of the piece, painting it like Melo didn't sign in LA because of Kobe is ridiculous. He's one of Kobe's best friends in the NBA, and Kobe's the only reason he was considering coming here. He chose an extra $30M instead. Kobe's fault?LeBron was going to Cleveland or staying in Miami, and that had nothing to do with Kobe. Blaming Kobe for LeBron not ending up in LA is specious as hell.

He then mentions Kobe's history with big men, citing relationships with Shaq, Howard, Bynum, & Gasol.

Shaq - Feuded with Penny Hardaway at the end of his time in Orlando. Feuded with Dwyane Wade at the end of his time in Miami. Talked crap about Phoenix on his way out. Talked crap about Cleveland on his way out. His feud with Kobe is the most publicized, but Shaq has a long history of feuds.

Bynum - Has a history of bizarre behaviors that have gotten him exiled from no less than 3 teams after leaving the Lakers. Obviously he has an extensive injury history, but he's been dropped from rosters because of his attitude rather than kept on the injured list, and can't even get a minimum contract offer. Most injury prone guys can at least get that. Teams don't want him around.

Howard - Looooong history of Drama Llamaness, before and after Kobe. This part of the piece is the truest...Howard didn't want to play with Kobe. I also think that the feeling was mutual, and that it's a blessing that we don't have that dude signed to a long term contract.

Pau - This one is the worst. Kobe & Pau are really, really tight. Here's a direct quote from Pau, after he signed with the Bulls. Acting like he & Kobe have a bad relationship is a flat out lie.

"It was difficult. We have a close friendship," Gasol said Friday via ESPN. "We've been through a lot together, and I'm sure I will miss him. But we talked to each other and our relationship goes beyond basketball and we'll always have a friendship.

"It was difficult to talk to him, but he was very supportive and he understood. He just said I had to do what was best for me and what felt right for me and he was going to support me no matter what. That's what friends and brothers do, and that's what we are."

Kobe's a dick. No doubt about that. And he may not be beloved, but he's damn respected amongst players. Where the Lakers are right now has very little to do with him, and saying that the Front Office "can't wait for him to leave" after they just gave him a huge extension is laughable. Even Phil Jackson (who has had his misgivings with Kobe) retweeted this yesterday.

Phil Jackson ✔ @PhilJackson11

"@flea333: henry abbott your @espn kobe article is absolute garbage and a blatant irresponsible attack. "Go get'em, Flea

Kobe's not faultless by any measure, but this was a ridiculous hit piece.
You're right for the most part LA. Shaq, Bynum, Howard, they were head cases with or without Kobe. However, I do think we missed out on Lebron or Melo, or even if let's say Durant was a FA as well, I don't think we would've had a shot at any of these guys because of Kobe in a sense.

The money he's making and his star power makes it hard for us right now to get a superstar like player. It doesn't matter if LeBron came here, he would've been a #2 in a sense until Kobe retired. He is being treated in LA right now like Jeter was being treated in NY. Even though there were better players on the Yankees, Jeter was still the star.

Until Kobe retires, I just don't see us getting that superstar player, at least not in FA. Trade or Draft would be our only shot.
Got you LA. Good points. Abbott did write an interesting piece (not saying totally honest) and its got a lot of attention. So, I guess he accomplished what he set out to do

The only way the Lakers are going to rebuild that franchise is to suck badly and get lucky in the draft. Once they get a college stud they can add via free agency. Kobe will be long gone by then.

Reality is that the Lakers will have no shot at the playoffs for at least the next 2-3 years. The teams in the West are way too good and the Lakers have a roster full of guys who are marginal at best. Sometimes you just have to tear it down completely and then start over. I think that is what the Lakers need to do.

If the Lakers don't have Kobe, do you think they have a shot at Melo or LeBron?

Durant won't be a FA until after Kobe's extension is up.

Didn't catch the game last night. Randle already makin good strides I hear? Anyone watch

Had a really nice 4th quarter stretch. Hit a couple of jumpers, blocked a couple of shots, had a coast to coast drive where he blew past everyone. Lots of talent there. Just needs to play and make his mistakes. Start around 8:50 if you want to see the Randle highlights.

Great. One of the things I like about this kid is the way he presents himself at 19. You watch interviews of Bynum at 19 when he came into the league, what a difference. This kid is well beyond his years, and it looks to be that way on the court as well... Reading the reports and blurbs from the game last night, he played fantastically. Figure this kind of performance won't be the norm, at least for a while as its just preseason, but its encouraging. Throwing out a "I used to tell people I dont wanna be like Shaq, I wanna be like Kobe", although he was alluding to the fact that he likes to dribble more than just be a post up player, is just kind of a badass thing to say as a rookie Laker being coached by 2 all-time greats (kobe and Byron).

First time I've been able to get excited about anything as a Laker fan in awhile....some future. Needs to chill w the turnovers like I said when the season began. Gonna be fun to watch him grow though.

Was just thinking what a difference a couple of years can make. When the Lakers had Howard, Pau and a healthy Kobe I never thought the Warriors had a chance in hell of beating them. Now, there isnt a guy on the Lakers who would start on the Dubs and probably 8 Warriors that would start for the Lakers. Amazing how things turned so quickly.

She sounded like an absolute idiot. She called anyone he didn't want to play with Kobe a "loser."

I don't know man, the only guys to hate playing with Kobe and vocal about it are Ramon Sessions and Smush Parker, and they're both losers in my book. What do you think?

She's not referring to Sessions or Parker, she's referring to FA's that supposedly wouldn't sign with the Lakers because of Kobe: Howard, Bosh, George, Anthony, etc. It's a dumb thing to say, especially when your team can't attract any of the top FA's because you're paying a 36 year old Kobe Bryant max money.

I agree. It was a really dumb thing to say but not surprising.

I think they would've had a better shot, since it would've been THEIR team and they wouldn't need to worry about their egos getting bruised, especially Melo. I don't think Lebron would've came here because he still wants to win championships. But look at Melo, if he was really that worried about winning a ring, he wouldn't have resigned back with the Knicks. Didn't he have offers from Rockets and Bulls? That should've been a no-brainer for him. He wanted his own team, the money, and being the main star in that city, what lot of top NBA players want.

On top of that, I think if we really don't have a solid roster in place by the time Kobe retires, it will still be hard to get a top FA that year. Why would a Durant, Griffin, Anthony Davis want to leave their team / city where they are the face, to come to place where you will be compared to Kobe and criticized when they miss a game winner, or do poor in the 4th, or don't win a ship, especially if there isn't a good roster set in place. We will romanticize about Kobe when he's gone, like we do about Jordan. We're gonna pretend like Kobe made every game winning shot and was always clutch and won every playoff game, you know the media will...it's gonna be a tough sell.

Like Ninerjohn said, it's gonna be tough until the Kobe era is over, and our best bet is probably to build through the draft and produce the next great Laker instead of trying to buy one.

Jed could learn a thing or two from Jeanie about how you support your franchise player/coach when they are under attack from the media.

What's happening to Kobe right now....just 2-3 weeks ago it was Harbaugh.

I didnt gather that from her comment. It was really the one time she showed passion during the interview.

Poor girl was put on the stand. Props to her.
