This. And, yes - they could have signed him in summer next year. It would have been a little difficult but nothing that would have stopped them. Varejao's 10M comes off the books - Tristian Thompson would be eligible for qualifying offer - Cavs could have decided to not extend it or trade him for a draft pick and trade Bennett for a bag of donuts. That's 20M right there. Couple other minor trades and they would have the cap space to sign Kevin Love.

Hell, they could have done a sign-n-trade next year with the Wolves. Cavs and Love could have twisted Wolves arms but decided to join in summer so they can try to gel together before the playoffs start in April.

Val should be glad Wolves finally have a GM. They don't have a good coach but they have a good GM.
