a 5-foot-10, 170-pound sophomore from Black River Falls, Wis., made 27 of 71 3-point attempts, was 52 of 108 overall from the field and added seven free throws on 10 attempts in 36 minutes. To be fair, Taylor plays for Grinnell, which runs a variant of the offense that Paul Westhead ran at LMU in the early 90′s, except it's faster. They want to shoot as quickly as possible, they press full-court the entire game, and they make complete line changes every minute or so. Most importantly, if they're not shooting a three or a layup, they ain't shooting it. It's a system that produces some crazy box scores. One year and one day ago, a Grinnell player set the D-III record for points at 89. Taylor recently transferred to Grinnell, located about 50 miles east of Des Moines, after playing one season for Wisconsin-La Crosse. He struggled in his debut at the nearby Wartburg Tournament over the weekend by hitting only 11 of 41 shots - including only 6 of 34 3-point attempts Still, he averaged 23.5 points a game. Taylor had 58 points at halftime. Then he got hot. Taylor was 32 of 58 shooting - including 18 3s - in the final 20 minutes and averaged an astounding four points a minute in the second half.

He was being interviewed and he said he had no idea he had that many points.

Jack Taylor, of the Grinnell College Pioneers, scored 138 points in a game last night, against Faith Baptist Bible College. It's a mindblowing number, shattering the old NCAA mark of 113, and it's being trumpeted as one of sports' all-time individual achievements. It is not. It is b******t. It is just the latest incarnation of Grinnell's decades-old strategy of seeking media attention for records achieved through a complete b*****dization of basketball.
