I'm glad they did it -- you don't just let the raping of children happen and not act. Sucks because it tarnishes an otherwise fantastic legacy.

didn't he report it to the AD?

Yes he did. But let me ask you this: If you knew your colleague was raping children and you passed that information your management and then you see him still around, no action, EVER, and it seems like nothing transpired about these allegations - you would be okay with knowing nothing happened to investigate this?

Very true. And, if Paterno had done something right away would another child have been spared this sexual abuse? No matter how you look at it Joe Paterno buried his head in the sand once he told the AD.

He was even at the school LAST WEEK. That really gets me. A lot more could have been done. This was poor judgement by a ton of people, and they need to face the consequences.

Athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz were charged Monday with failing to notify authorities after an eyewitness reported a 2002 assault. The two will seek to have the charges dismissed, their lawyers said. Curley requested to be placed on administrative leave so he could devote time to his defense, and Schultz will be going back into retirement, the school announced.

They were even saying on Chronicle Live that he would bring children with him to the hotels on road trips. Uh, are you telling me no one thought that was even a little strange? Paterno looked the other way, and deserves all the blame thrown at him.

What I'm really scratching my head about is what motivation did Paterno have to not look into it further?

Although he was banned from campus in 2002 (which means they knew about this AT LEAST 9 years ago!!!), they allowed him to use their sister complex... to run his children's organization.

This baffles me. Absolutely baffles me. What do these people gain by NOT saying anything? How do you wake up in the morning or INTERACT with someone that you know is raping children? You know this! I am shocked that this evil was just turned away from. It really makes me sick.

"Legally" he was right, morally he was backwards as hell. I know for a fact I couldn't just see this person around with no action all the time, running a children's organization, knowing what he did and not ask why nothing happened.

Very true. That is why I still can't believe he actually new to the extent of what they are reporting. Just doesn't add up.

paterno is a freaking god where penn st is located and a huge figure in the st of PA, he has more power than the AD and he couldve done much more then just say something to the AD. they all knew sandusky was a damn pedophile and yet he still had access to the facilities and had an office there still, the fact is paterno knew and wanted to protect his long time dc and friend and the former president and ad knew as well and looked to protect the school and couldnt care less about the children

What if they all were child molesters? I'm being completely serious here. This goes beyond negligence, this is enabling.

No. From what I read it was said that the initial report was that Sandusky and a young boy were in locker room and inappropriate contact may have taken place. You guys have no idea what was said to Paterno. What if it was something along the line of "Saw Sandusky with a young boy in the locker room. something didn't feel right." Would you immediately run to the cops?

God dammit! Paterno TESTIFIED TO THE GRAND JURY that the graduate assistant told him that he saw Sandusky doing something of a sexual nature to a kid! What is wrong with you people!??!?

The graduate assistant, who was familiar with Sandusky, was going to put some newly purchased sneakers in his locker and get some recruiting tapes to watch. It was about 9:30 p.m. As the graduate assistant entered the locker room doors, he was surprised to find the lights and showers on. He then heard slapping sounds. He believed the sounds to be those of sexual activity. As the graduate assistant put the sneakers in his locker, he looked into the shower. He saw a naked boy, Victim 2, whose age he estimated to be 10 years old, with his hands up against the wall, being subjected to anal intercourse by a naked Sandusky. The graduate assistant was shocked but noticed that both Victim 2 and Sandusky saw him. The graduate assistant left immediately, distraught.

The graduate assistant went to his office and called his father, reporting to him what he had seen. His father told the graduate assistant to leave the building and come to his home. The graduate assistant and his father decided that the graduate assistant had to report what he had seen to Coach Joe Paterno ("Paterno"), head football coach of Penn State. The next morning, a Saturday, the graduate assistant telephoned Paterno and went to Paterno's home, where he reported what he had seen.

Joseph V. Paterno testified to receiving the graduate assistant's report at his home on a Saturday morning. Paterno testified that the graduate assistant was very upset. Paterno called Tim Curley ("Curley"), Penn State Athletic Director and Paterno's immediate superior, to his home the very next day, a Sunday, and reported to him that the graduate assistant had seen Jerry Sandusky in the Lasch Building showers fondling or doing something of a sexual nature to a young boy.

Approximately one and a half weeks later, the graduate assistant was called to a meeting with Penn State Athletic Director Curley and Senior Vice President for Finance and Business Gary Schultz ("Schultz"). The graduate assistant reported to Curley and Schultz that he had witnessed what he believed to be Sandusky having anal sex with a boy in the Lasch Building showers. Curley and Schultz assured the graduate assistant that they would look into it and determine what further action they would take. Paterno was not present for this meeting.

Calm down.

I didn't read that part of the Grand Jury report. Is what you posted above directly from it or some new article? If it is directly from the grand jury report then by Paterno's own words he knew that something of a sexual nature took place.

Then I will stand corrected. Unbelievable that someone of his stature would cover this up. It is shocking to me how many screwed up people there are in the world.
Man college football is really messed up right now with all the cheating but this may be the worst scandal since the Baylor scandal.

Fred, I mean... this is why I am so disgusted. I know for a fact, my moral compass would not EVER allow me to just let this slide. Not even my best friend of 60 years. I would beat the absolute s**t out of this guy and I would call the police. I don't care about "hard decisions." This is not a hard decision. This guy deserves to burn! And if it was Paterno sticking up for Sandusky, he also deserves to burn. It will be interesting to hear what the AD and others involved say.
