"The San Jose Sharks have selected Nikolay Goldobin with the 27th overall pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.
Goldobin oozes offensive ability, with high-end creativity and a plus wrist shot. The Russian winger has the rare ability to take over a game, as evidenced by his 38 goals and 94 points with the Sarnia Sting of the OHL. He has poise and confidence with the puck and has tremendous IQ on that end of the ice. While there arent questions about that side of his game, his play away from the puck and in the defensive zone are suspect. There are also questions about his work ethic and effort level. That being said, he has clear top-six potential, so if the Sharks get him to focus, the upside for him is exceptional."

I like the pick, but the effort thing is a concern. As Sharks fans, we've become accustomed to seeing our team pack it in way too often, "saving their energy for the next game" or taking it easy when we have a ONE or two goal lead.

Our goalie play would look a lot better if we had a better corps of defensemen to help out.

Sharks issued their RFA offers today. Some players who have been officially booted out of the prospect farm: Defensemen Comrie, Acolatse, and Petrecki.. and Forward Viedensky, Stalberg, and Brodie Reid. Only one sort of surprising was Acolatse, but I guess we had better guys in the farm already. Petrecki was a bust, and Comrie wasn't anything special, and the other ones just couldn't ever stay healthy.
The players getting offers included:
Jason Demers D
Taylor Doherty D
Harri Sateri G
James Sheppard F
Matt Tennyson D
Tommy Wingels F
Surprise one? Sateri... Guy has been terrible in net for Worcester. But then again, you have to wonder how much blame the Defense gets. Very happy to see Doherty and Tennyson continue to have the opportunity to develop. Wingels is a no-brainer, Sheppard was great, and Demers is good depth, although we need better on the top 4 of the D.

Really hoping Mueller can get up to the NHL soon, but who knows how far along he is. If he makes it up to the NHL before the end of this next season I'll be ecstatic. Been saying it for years, we need an 8-deep dominant defensive group because that is what the Cup Winners / Participants have had for years now. Until we sign or trade for anyone on defense, our TC defensive roster is:
Vlasic
Burns
Braun
Demers
Stuart
Irwin
Tennyson
Doherty
Mueller
Demelo
That's not going to cut it.

demers is good depth?
i thought he got back on track after a down season last year. He was easily one of our better defensemen last year under johnson.

Don't get me wrong, he's a good player, and last season was his best year, but I'm not quite ready to say he's a great or elite defender. We'll see this season is he can sustain that success. Before last year, he wasn't a guy that would consistently be on the top 4. On some of the deeper teams, he would've been a decent #4, but a very good 5th defenseman.
Between Vlasic, Boyle, Braun and Demers, he was the 4th best out of them overall, defensively speaking. Braun actually had a nice year and is still getting even better. He didn't miss a single game, finished with 17 points and a +19 rating, as well as 2 points and a +1 rating in the playoffs. Demers had 34 points in 75 games in the regular season with a +14 rating, which is great -- however, he had 1 point and a -4 rating in the playoffs this past season.
Demers definitely deserves a spot on this team, but I think if we want a truly elite group, we still need to upgrade that defense. Again, Demers is a good player, so having him as the 5th or 6th D-man would just mean we have an outstanding top 4 ahead of him. I guess that's just what I was getting at.

Christian "hold my purse" Ehrsoft? Don't think DW would do that either.
