SF Giants Off Season Thread

I really dont think a hitting coach makes that big a difference in the overall scheme of things. It is on the players to figure it out. A hitting coach alone cant turn a .230 hitter into a .300 + hitter

that might have been the worst possible guy to promote. of all possible people, we promote the Fresno Grizzlies hitting coach??

way to influx some new ideas and strategies guys...promote the guy who taught half the team how to hit in AAA up to the majors to teach them the same crap that wasnt helping in the first place.

when will the Giants get out of this rut of making the lamest possible moves? signing mediocre players, hiring mediocre coaches, playing mediocre baseball.

heres a good way to get the bats going, spend some money on real bats! not Michael Tucker type bats, Matt Holliday type bats.

once again the giants are 100 miles off course bumbling with their hitting coaches instead of actually signing some players who CAN hit.

/rant

Anyone who has a brain and is a major league hitting coach, wouldn't sign with this team, cause they would set themselves up for failure! BamBam has nothing to lose!

Well we can always hope that the old adage of "those who can't do, teach" is actually true

I agree that you cant turn a .230 hitter into a .300 hitter but you are mistaken if you dont think a good hitting coach can make a difference. That is the same as saying that a pitching coach doesnt matter because the pitcher needs to figure it out. They ALL need coaching and refining.

Having someone watch your swing and pick up habits is VERY important. Its no differenet in baseball than it would be in golf. Why do you think the greatest golfer of our lifetime has a coach?

I agree John. And just like you said you need someone to watch and pick up on things, however he doesn't necessarily need to be a HOF for him to do those things. While I have no idea who this guy is, I'll give him a chance since he may be able to do the job. Hey, they say he helped out Velez right?

I agree that you dont need a hall of fame hitter as a hitting coach. Some guys, like Tony Gwynn would be awesome at it. Others I would not be so sure about. I really question whether Mark McSteroid will be effective in St. Louis. I just would have preferred someone outside the organization and someone who was a proven coach at the major league level.

The Yankees are interested in re-signing Johnny Damon, and may be willing to offer two years and $16MM. Heyman believes the White Sox and Giants will be among the other suitors.

Please God no.

I can understand that, and that would have been my preference as well, but oh well, well see how this goes.

This makes me very very sad. Please don't go after Damon, I'll be more depressed than upset with this miserable management.

You are evil. LOL. It just makes you realize what an idiot Sabean has been for a long long time.

As far as Damon goes... no thanks. I would much rather have Abreu at a salary around the same price. Here is the thing on both of them. If the Yankees and Angels are going to offer those kind of deals how much will Sabean in his desparation offer? Scary isnt it.

I strongly doubt that Abreu is going anywhere.

And just no to Damon.

I can't hate him too much, he did bring us Jeff Kent for no one, and also got us Jason Schmidt for a bunch of scrubs. I don't love him, but he's done his fair share in both ends of the spectrum. That trade doesn't look AS horrible right now with Bonser and Liriano doing jack s**t.

His free agent signings are always what gets me. I'm just worried about the Giants going after "marquee" players just because they are over the hill all-stars. I would take a flyer on Delmon Young for LF if he gets non-tendered. He's only 24 years old and could use a change of scenery.

I can see them going after a Bay/Holliday and overpaying, and then shooting for an over the hill corner infielder in Troy Glaus or Adrian Beltre. Only five years too late....

Hate to disagree with you.. LOL. but the Giants hardly gave up "no one" to get Jeff Kent. Matt Williams was one of the top 3b in baseball at the time. He also averaged 29 homers and 106 rbi over the next 3 seasons after he left the Giants. Was it a good trade? Yes, of course. Was it for nothing? Hardly.

Sabean has made about 3 good deals in 12 years. The Schmidt deal was more about the Pirates being stupid and having a fire sale but I still give him credit for that. My question is.. isnt there a statue of limitations on credit for deals made when you havent done crap for years?????????
I will give you this about Sabean though... his trading history IS better than his track record in the draft and especially with free agents where he has failed miserably.

I know.. people say he has done such a great record in the draft because of Lincy, Cain, Bumgarner, and Posey. I would argue that Sabean's track record in the draft was horrific until John Barr came along and that he hasnt produced a quality major league hitter in his entire time with the Giants that made any impact with this team.

Should be interesting off season. Just close your eyes and say a prayer that Sabean doesnt totally screw things up again.
