Thank god marleau is signed. Losing him for nothing would've been a huge blow.

Next step, sign a vet goalie for 2 or 3 mil and make a trade for a top 4 D man.
thats too much for patty

thats not a hometown discount at all

What will we have to pay jumbo next year or the year after?

My 2 cents:

-Sign G Dan Ellis: Probably close to half price of Mason, only 30yrs old, and probably willing to split time with another goalie.
-Don't trade for a defenseman. Without doing a blockbuster, the only trading chip is Couture and I don't you should trade him
-Sign FA D-Man, like Willie Mitchell, and make Demers a regular.

Pass on Willie mitchell. If we sign a D man, go after Dan Hamhuis or Zbynek Michalek.

He may be a trade chip this offseason if his contract demands are too high.
According to CapGeek, who has updated the San Jose salary cap situation, the Sharks are now close to $48 million divided among 14 players with a little over $12 million to play with. As with a lot of teams in the current NHL, a large chunk of their cap is tied into their core players. San Jose a little over $32 million tied up between Marleau, Pavelski, Thornton, Heatley, and Boyle for next season. Thornton is a free agent after next season, while the other four are locked up until after the 2013-14 season

After Philly traded for Hamhuis rights, I gotta think they sign him in the next week.

Michalek? SJ Sharks don't have the salary cap IMO. Right now, SJ Sharks have $12 million in cap space (after the Pavelski/Marleau signings). But you gotta remember what happens next year. RFA: Demers, Greiss. Both are on the verge of becoming essential players to SJ and you need at least $3 and maybe $4 million to split between them based on how good of a season they have (currently, both make in the 500k ranger, I expect them both to want to be in the $1-2 million range on their next contract).

So that leaves $8 million in space to split between 4 forwards, 1 defenseman, 1 goalie. Usually roster fill in spaces can expect to be paid 500-800k, so lets assume SJ can get 4 forwards at 700k each.

That leaves about $5 million to split between goalie/defenceman, so if a player is going to be asking above $3 million it may be too much fo SJ. That is without Setoguchi getting a new deal (currently he is at $1.2 million as a RFA)

Michalek will probably cost about the same as Mitchell. We need Gooch and at least one of either Malhotra or Nichol back. I think we're looking at Stalock -- the AHL all-star as the future instead of Greiss.

If we have to, we have young guys with low salaries that can fill in the gaps, but I think we can get it done. If we trade anyone, I'd have to say the only piece I'd really want to let go of is Heatley. We made it to the Conference Finals without him really doing anything because of the torn groin.

Granted, I suppose if he's healthy this year, we'll see if we can get farther, but if we can't (and he's not traded before then), I'd say use him as a bargaining chip to get a top notch D-man.

Wait.. What are these "future considerations" ? It can't be much, considering we pretty much just got scrubs and a pick.

Stalock is also a RFA next year. Of course he will only count if he is called up.

And I would be pretty surprised if Mitchell costs the same as Michalek. Mitchell is coming off a concussion and Michalek is 5 years younger (27). In fact, Michalek will probably get the same contract Mitchell is just coming off of (4 years @ $3.5 million) which Mitchell signed when he was 29. Mitchell is loooking at probably a low $2 million for 2-3 years.
