Here's a hint on Evgeni Nabokov's future. Henrik Karlsson, a San Jose Sharks goalie who played in Sweden before sitting on the bench for the Sharks' playoffs games, tells a Swedish newspaper that the Sharks want to keep Nabokov and Thomas Greiss.

His one-year deal expires this offseason, so this huge goalie (6-foot-6) appears to be making other plans since he wants to play in the NHL.

As for Nabokov, many have speculated the Sharks would let him walk and sign a cheaper goalie -- maybe Marty Turco or Chris Mason. And some think the Washington Capitals may be interested in signing Nabokov. ESPN Insider's E.J. Hradek writes: "The Caps could use a veteran to mentor young Semyon Varlamov. Nabokov could be just the right comrade for the job."

However, if Nabokov stays, then that means the Sharks are likely letting Patrick Marleau walk in free agency.

ive read that stupid s**t before. i'd let nabokov walk over marleau any day of the week. im sick of tired of nabokov's sucking the life of the whole team with a weak play off goal yr after yr and letting a goalie who he no business of outplaying him do just that we should surround greiss, stalock, karlssson or a cheap fa goalie with elite defense and keep marleau. its been proven you dont need to pay a goalie 5 mil per yr to win the cup

I bet you Karlsson gets a shot next year, but I think Stalock is the future. What if we let Nabby go and brought back Boucher (if he leaves Philly)?

Who's going to replace Blake this year? We need 2-3 new defensemen.

UFA's that I'd be interested in getting here:

D Anton Volchenkov
RW Owen Nolan
RW Arron Asham
LW Steve Begin
LW Jere Lehtinen
C Kyle Wellwood

And then.. hopefully we can find a budding star from our prospects. Who knows when Doherty, Petrecki, or whomever will be ready to help our D. We need more defensemen that can score. That was a big key for Chicago.

So many questions. So little answers.

Is that when we can finally start signing people. Or actually -- let me rephrase -- is that when transactions along with other "real news" can finally start happening? In my spare time, with no hockey or football to fill the sporting void in my life currently (SF Giants aren't enough right now), I've just been doing some reading on how our prospects did this past year -- specifically the D-men.

The players I'm most interested in are. . .

Forwards: Drew Daniels, Justin Daniels, Philip Varone, Marek Viedensky, Patrick White, Tommy Wingels
Defensemen: Dominik Bielke, Taylor Doherty, William Wrenn, Nick Petrecki

Quote:

Offense:
Viedensky looks like one of, if not the best, prospects we've got on offense right now. He shined for his team in both the regular season, the playoffs, and the World Juniors. 59 points in 61 games (20 Goals, 39 Assists) and a +17 rating. 7 goals and 3 assists in ten playoff games.

If anyone might be better than Marek Viedensky, it could be Tommy Wingels. He'll be entering his senior year at Miami-Ohio this year. He's the captain, and this past season he had 42 points (16 goals, 21 assists) and was a +14 in 34 games. Also had 6 points with a +4 rating in ten playoff games. He apparently was one of the better defensive forwards in the league.

Varone had a decent year, but missed a lot of time due to injury. He had 9 G and 22 A in 31 games before getting hurt. Also was +7.

Both the Daniels brothers had poor Freshman years, finishing -4 and -6. 8 Goals for Justin, 4 for Drew. But granted, this is their first year of college. Hopefully they get better.

Patrick White didn't do much. Nothing really even worth noting.

Quote:

Defense:
Bielke did well at the World Juniors for Germany. Doesn't seem to be a major offensive contributor, but his +5 rating during the WJC suggest he did exceptionally well at his job -- playing D.

The 6-7 220 pound Doherty looks pretty good. He's big but can still get involved offensively. Was only a +1 though, so that could mean he needs a little work, but it's better than being on the minus side. Doherty had 44 points in 63 games (16 goals, 28 assists) and 5 points in 5 playoff games where he was +4.

Williams Wrenn - I remember reading about Wrenn when we drafted him. If I recall he was noted for he ferocious hitting ability. That would explain why his numbers were low. But the worrisome thing is the fact that he was injured a lot last year. Missing games in the middle, and the end of the season, including the playoffs.

Petrecki probably isn't ready. Not expected to rack up a lot of points, but he finished his AHL season a -4, with 4 goals and 14 assists.

Looks like Doherty and Bielke are the closest to being ready, if we're looking for defensive help from the prospect pool. We better sign someone.

well, it seems like the sharks already are giving up on the cup

if we bring back nabokov we wont win the cup, GUARANTEED!!!! if we bring him back im gonna start believing ownership just cares about winning regular season awards and just selling out the shark tank. nabokov will not take a pay cut when hes 35 and this is his last good contract he'll see. i'll be extremely pissed if we keep nabokov over marleau

Id actually think Dougie goes with Griess and depending on how the coaching staff feels with stalock as the backup. Griess looks ok when he starts, but when he comes in for cleanup duty not so much. With some more coaching he should be good to go

If you go with Greiss and re-invest in some solid defense-men the sharks will be ok.

Greiss isn't going to get the Sharks very far if he's their #1 goalie. You'd be better off signing a retread...

Give Greiss a chance. I dont think this team will be a dominant force next year.

I'd rather have Griess and Stalock compete. Howard and Niemi were both rookies, right? .. Look where they got. I wouldn't be surprised if Henrik Karlsson gets a shot.

Old post i know

but karlsson just signed with the KHL

Looks like we won't see Karlsson now. Stalock and Greiss. Hope Stalock can develop into a great one.

On the brightside, looks like Doherty did well enough to get picked for Team Canada's Development team.

Sad day today. It didn't really all hit me until now.

Huge void realized now with the loss of Rob Blake. One of the nastiest hitters, hardest shooters, but also smartest players on the team. Irreplicable. Irreplaceable.

We're basically left just hoping to find someone to fill the gap or develop in that gap into hopefully something great in the future.

Congrats to a great career, Blake. We'll miss what you brought to this team.

spezza for jumbo + gooch

thank god

idk, its ekland though prolly not true
If not Nabokov, who would be your goalie?

Turco? - His game has completely fallen off, and despite several playoff runs, only had one good post-season.

Theodore? - He had one good year in MTL and after that he has been average at best.

Toskala? - You really think he could be more than a backup?

Chris Mason? Dan Ellis? Leighton?

I don't really see how you could want any goalie on the market over Nabokov. Your only other chance is a trade, and clearly SJ isn't willing to make a big trade (since Halak went for relatively cheap).

LMAO, trade arguably our BEST player with arguably our MOST promising young winger? Again, LMFAO. For Spezza? No. Sorry. No. Spezza and Heatley are not reuniting. That'd be a HORRIBLE trade. Bull crap. It's not true.

Edit: Okay, I read the thing -- and even with Volchenkov, I don't think we would make that trade. Guy spelled Setoguchi wrong.
