when I boxed in college we used thick 16 oz gloves and our headgear was thicker than Magneto's helmet... even if you caught a thumb, the chances of a thumb poke from a 16oz glove was very minimal and if you did get poked it wasn't enough to do eye damage.
If they're sparring with 8oz gloves and no headgear.. well...
