Chiefs fans are already adding him to their lineup. It would make this entire offseason worth it just have their plans spoiled and all that restructuring being pointless.

imagine you have to let the best LT in the NFL leave in part because you can't restructure/commit to your QB beyond this yr (because he might not be that good)

hopefully they get it done, but god damn I'll be pissed.

And your solution is what?

Let's not freak out yet. If the Chiefs pay him more than we're able to and he wants to go there then more power to him and the Chiefs. Garoppolo isn't Mahomes so what's the point in comparing the situation? We know he's on a one year trial at best.

I can't see the Chiefs paying Trent so much because they don't need Trent. They just need someone who isn't trash. This is a good OL class. I just don't see them making that move but we'll see what happens.
I'm preparing to be pissed

My original solution was moving Jimmy, getting Sam, keeping an extra $20M resigning whomever we want, sign whomever we want and drafting a high ceiling QB in the 1st.

the situation is WHEN you have a FQB you can restructure them and not feel f**ked having to pay them more down the road. They clearly don't have that situation and have to figure out who's more important for this team long-term. Losing the best OT in football because you want to see if your QB can play one more yr?

KC is committed to winning and if they can afford to pay Trent and not lose their core guys, why wouldn't they? They got their FQB.

I agree we will see what happens, I still think Trent ends up in SF but the longer this plays out the more likely he leaves. Hopefully they wrap this b***h up by the end of the weekend though.

It's Dee Ford's choice for sure, whether to get cut or spread out the cap hit for another year or two. Personally, if I was the 49ers, with the cap space they have, I think they can eat Ford's dead cap money and still be able to get some good free agents. (I defer to AB on that though) The free agents may have to wait a bit to get their money, but they will get their money. 49ers might have to pay a bit more of a premium if any of the free agents have to wait to get their money - at least that's one way I'd deal with the fact that Dee Ford's cap space doesn't free up until (I think) June 1. It would be nice if Dee Ford can help the team out, but he doesn't have to, and the 49ers can't rely on whether or not Dee Ford will want to either.
Imagine the Chiefs being like $20 Million over the cap, Us having $25 Million in cap space and losing TW to them. Should never happen. Need to do what they do and cheat the flawed system. I keep hearing how kicking the can down the road hurts you in the long run but year and year after these teams keep doing it and never suffer any consequences. And the reason being is it's like having an unlimited credit card with no due date to pay it off. What makes it an unfair playing field is alot of GM's can't afford to pay those signing bonuses upfront. Veach is not some genious, the franchise just happens to have alot of money. He's not doing anything unheard of. Other's just can't afford to do it.

They still get their signing bonuses as soon as they sign their deal.

from what I've read from Lombardi they could take Ford $11.6M that's gtd for injury on 4/1 and turn it into a signing bonus. He's gets all that cash upfront but it would be prorated over the life of the deal. They would cut him more than likely after this yr (throw him on IR) and just eat that extra cash but spread it out. They'd still save a ton of cap space.

Well they had to cut both OTs (both are injured) and a Mahomes restructure saves $17M this yr.

Kicking the can down the road works as long as you have the right guys to restructure imo...but yeah overall doesn't really seem to hurt teams overall.

SF's ownership has plenty of cash to pay these dudes if they want...I remember hearing that was a reason why Oakland couldn't resign Mack, they couldn't afford to actually pay him his signing bonus along with all the other guys they had under contract.
I am surprised the Niners haven't discussed restructuring Bosa's contract. He is making over $9 Million in 2021. Move most of that into 2022 and he would still be underpaid for that year. Or give him an extension now. He might be cheaper now than he will be in 2 years. I know it's risky with him coming his 2nd ACL injury but sometimes you have to take risks.

I think the issue is this year is just poor timing for us unfortunately. Rams figuring out Goff sucks and going all out for Stafford.

Lower cap number than expected due to covid.

Tons of key free agents including arguably the best/biggest free agent on the market.

That's why I have a hard time seeing us make the move for Watson or move into the top 5 for one of the top QBs.

We need the picks to cover for the free agents leaving and also hope we hit on rookies to help with the cap.

I don't think Jimmy or Darnold would be the future so the Mahomes thing isn't even something worth bringing up imo. Now this draft appears to be solid at the positions we have free agents in - CB, OL and some solid DE depth. So maybe if a QB prospect they like drops past 5 they can make a move up that won't take their whole draft and they can hit on the later picks to bring in players at positions we may lose in free agency.

It will be very telling. I'm honestly don't remember being as torn about what direction I want the team to go with...but hopefully free agency will help with that.

I still hope we draft one of the top 5 QBs in round 1 but not sure that's in the cards with all the QB needy teams picking ahead of us. I'd hate to lose Trent because we know he's a stud and it's one less critical position needed on draft day but if he does walk it sucks but not the end of the world.

Next week should be "interesting"

Pretty sure you can't touch his contract til after year 3

I could be wrong but you can't touch a rookies contract (restructure/extend) until after their 3rd yr

Oh ok. That explains it then.
