Yo, you all realize we now have the 9th MOST cap space now right? With so many teams cutting quality players right now, we should be in prime position to not only resign our own (TW, Verrett, K'Waun and Juice) but possibly bring in at least 1 quality C/G and/or ER/CB and then feast on the pool of quality players that are still available well after the opening of free agency at reduced rates. Oversaturated positions like S and DL should be nice again.

Agree with both hall of fame posters.

I'll just add that Saleh is not the GM and the Jets may implode because of it. In other words, cap discipline is a lot harder to do than to say, specially if a teams front office (which includes the HC) doesn't draft well. Case in point George Seifert. He could coach well, but not really draft well. Washes first draft he got Joe Montana, Seifert first draft, he got Dexter Carter. Kyle got Kittle, HarBaalke got Aldon etc..

If ShanaLynch does well in free agency (sign Trent and Mack and add some inexpensive but valuable free agent OLinemen) look for them to go with edge rushers and skill positions again and ignore restocking the OLine with young talent. I do hope they draft a nice young talented center instead of another Richburg 2.0, but with new OLine coaches, who knows if they are strong enough to argue that their squad needs some draft reinforcements to Kyle.
This is going to be fascinating to watch. Typically every team loses at least one key in house free agent...maybe a couple.

But now? We're about to get a case study on just how flexible this new CBA is at moving money around to get under the cap.

If a team like the Saints can do it without losing an inordinate number of players, it removes all excuses for FO's to "get better" going forward.

Agree. it will be very interesting how the Saints handle Brees' dead cap hit if he retires this offseason. If he does, I think that frees up a ton of cap space for the Saints.

However, I'm against restructuring if you don't do it for a good reason. Giving guaranteed money out without factoring in the long term consequences will lead you to a Rams type of situation, I think. Where you have very little cap space left to take advantage of the free agency phase of the offseason.

They are just kicking the can down the road. Saints fans giving all this praise to their GM for getting out of cap hell when it's not rocket science. He's not coming up with some magical new idea that has been unheard of before. What makes the salary cap so easy to manipulate is you can use the cap like a credit card but no due date to have it payed off and the card is unlimited. Aslong as the cap keeps going up, Teams will keep being allowed to get out of trouble with their foolish spending.

Prior to this, it was looking like another Zane Beadles or Tom Compton free agency. Not anymore.

We're about to see how serious they are about winning a Superbowl. They have a legit chance to be a top 3 team in talent on the field and #1 in depth.

Truth.

it's a no-excuse position for all scenarios; they can improve protection significantly and trade up if their targeted QB should fall some in the draft.

Absolutely. And even if they don't move up to get their QB, they have an option to build up the rest of the team at critical positions like OL, ER and CB.

We're also about to see a number of ER and OL hit free agency like never before.

Only a handful of teams will be in position to buy. And we're one of them.

Are they staying with their moneyball principles (letting TW get away) or are they more serious about building a Championship roster?

They've been mid-tier from day 1.

Absolutely and especially after seeing all starting QBs get injured and almost a certainty with at shakeup at CB and WR. Nothing hides a QBs' deficiency or holes on the backend of a defense like great consistent play at the LOS.

Perfectly stated, I expect to get some corners or IOL in free agency. Possibly even an edge like Markus Golden

Make sure you take $9M off that for rookie contracts.
I would like to know more about dates regarding the cap.
When is the date when every team has to be under the cap? To begin the new league year?
I know there's the famous June 1 designation which could help for some late signings, when most of the talent is gone.
Aound 10m has to be saved for rookie contracts. I'd guess rookie contracts count against the top 51 when they get signed, not when they get drafted.
So what if you designate a June 1 cut and use those savings to sign your rookie class and perhaps some guys who weren't picked by anybody during FA frenzy.

And if they cut b***h ass ford and b***h ass richburg, then they would have more cap room.

Only your top 2-3 picks will count against the top 51, right now, just our 1st and 2nd rd picks will count, no team accounts fully for their draft picks rookie pool at beginning of the league year because no one knows for sure what the rookie pools will be. June 1 cuts won't really help, we need cap room ASAP to re-sign our own, no big name FA we are gonna sign will wait till June 2nd to sign their deal.

Richburg will be cut, Ford who knows, his injury guarantee will kick in on April 1, if he can't pass a physical he won't be cut.

Agree, and factor in probable restructurings and cuts like dee Ford and Richburg and Jimmy taking some guaranteed cash up front to free up some cap space. Praag has put this team on a great position to take advantage of the free agency period.

With the new TV contracts on the horizon I can see some back loaded contracts happening for players willing to wait for their pay day after June 1. Having said that, I agree with you that most players won't want to wait after June 1. We still need cap space prior to June 1.

Saleh is going to get a pass this year from the Jets fanbase and owners. And the honeymoon is probably going to last at least another season. He can sign whoever he wants, or not. He should not splurge at all. Just sign journeymen and bodies and write off the upcoming season. Next season is when he will really go to work. He will have a larger cap, maybe even carry over cap space from this year, and get another high draft number. So, he will get lots of cap space to sign some big players, and draft a high pick.
