I don't know if this has been asked but how much cap space could be made if the team got rid of the following players via trade/cut/waive/release?
Goodwin, Pettis, Thomas, Witherspoon, McKinnon
Goodwin - $1.2M cap / $3.6M savings if cut
Pettis - $1.3M cap / $378K savings
Thomas - $8.9M cap / $0 savings
Witherspoon - $243K cap / $2.1M savings
McKinnon - $4M cap/ $4.5M savings
In that case the team NEEDS TO DO IT. Those guys are not worth holding on to.
If the team extends Buckner and or Kittle, depending on how they structure their contracts it can actually create more salary cap space this season. I think Goodwin and McKinnon are as good as gone. I think we'll see a couple more restructures as well.
Not sure about that fully. Kittle is scheduled to make $2.2M for 2020. Extending him probably means he's getting around $12M APY. Buckner is scheduled to make $14.3M for 2020 and projects to make $16M. You can probably extend the years and spread that total $ out over the life of the contract but it's probably not going to lower it this year b/c of bonuses.
I just saw a tweet sent out a week or so ago detailing how it's possible. I'm not a cap guy. I get my cap info from Spotrac but I can usually atleast see when someone knows what their talking about. This guy seemed to know his business.
I wonder if it was our own AB. I don't see it on his site. But likely. There's lots of ways of working it too...could convert more to bonuses, because it's an extension, push out to start hitting harder in 2021+. But yeah, if you do happen to see it again, let me know. I'm no expert myself. I believe you, obviously.
PS: I'll ask him.
Yeah I searched for it for a bit but I don't see it. If I find it I'll post it. No telling who said it with all the feeds that pop through but it's possible it was him.

Remember that if a team trades for sol Thomas they are only paying him 4.5 mil and we're liable for the rest. So I don't see his salary getting him in the way of being traded. Bottom line is we save 4 mil and a roster spot, if we're lucky we can get a 5th round pick. Silly boy is gone don't worry
There has to be a team with porous run defense, similar to us in 2016 that would trade a pick for Thomas.
We aren't going to trade him. He will play out next season and we will see how he gets on.
I thought that until AA and Ward had career years. And we gave up picks for Sanders. The space is needed. If it turns out someone will trade for Thomas and take the contract, he's gone.

I wonder if we could extend Thomas, for like 3yrs/$4m per and save a little cap room that way
his agent probably wouldn't go for it though

we also need to restructure Garoppolo's deal first and foremost, he's a $30 mil cap hit

I thought about saying this in my previous post. That sounds reasonable, maybe include incentives. $250,000 for every sack he gets. 1 million for pro bowl. 2 million for All pro.
I don't think it's a long shot. I mean, realistically what will his market really be if he has another lame season? 3 years 5-6 million? Maybe some team gives him that deal. He's only going to be 25 come next March.

Ideas from USA Today's Cary Edmondson:
1) Tag then trade Armstead. If they somehow re-sign him, they'll still have Ward, Blair + in addition to beefy extensions for Buckner & Kittle. Trading AA for draft picks makes more sense. Lynch has a huge void between rds 2-5. JL will obviously have to upgrade the DL depth. If they just let AA walk, the best supplemental pick they could get is a 3rd rounder, and they'd still be short on draft picks.
2) Release Joe Staley. CE acknowledges it'd be unpopular, but it'd yield @ $11M in cap space. If nothing else, restructure his contract. Bruskill could hold down LT unless they choose to move McGlinchey. Definitely draft a top OT (along w/OG/C). Getting some more picks could really help there.
3) Release McKinnon & Coleman. The former's a big playing risk & TC's in his final contract year. Their releases would yield @ $9M in cap space. With Mostert, Breida & Wilson back, the RB corps is still in good shape, They can always add another RB on the cheap.
Makes sense to restructure Jimmy's contract, too. It'll take a combination of cuts, trades, restructuring, etc. to get to a point where Lynch will have enough capital to be competitive in FA. Go get 'em, Paraag.

You want to extend Thomas? Come on man. Get rid of him. We don't want him longer.

It's what happens when you're the #2 pick in the draft, look at Bosa's cap numbers in 2020-2022, hits $10M in year 4.
And yes I'm back, I've missed you guys, I've been going back and forth with many of you, especially my boy NCommand.

Spotrac says 26 mil?
$26.6M to be exact, restructuring his deal would save over $19M.

Thanks mayo, I've missed a lot of people here, just gonna stay away from the PL.
Feel free to ask any questions you want, I did do my cap plan to keep the core together, I'm sure NCommand posted it, if you or anyone needs it let me know.
