I am intrigued by the "what happens if you're over the cap" question. I'm sure it's been made clear to GMs and owners, but it's strange it isn't written down anywhere.

Honestly, no one knows outside of the NFL, NFLPA, the owners, front offices, etc.... I was told that you don't want to know what happens if you do go over the cap, but I was never told exactly what.

I imagine it's worse than tampering, which is usually docked pick(s), fined, and could have to switch picks with the team that says you were tampering like with the Bears back in like 2008 or so, we were docked a 3rd I think, and had to give our 3rd to the Bears for their 5th or something like that, over Lance Briggs I think.
Bump, Dontae Johnson's deal is 1yr $1,272,500, with $712,500 GTD($560K base & $152,500 signing bonus), $1.12M base salary, only $895K counts, $1,047,500 cap numbers, have us at $1,663,046 under the cap.

But but but the cap isn't preventing us from signing any FAs. Forget upgrading the OL, safety position or pass rush. We could still make 1 more solid move to put us over the top. Even the Rams dramatically improved their run D with Wagner

It's funny you see that post and see we're not trying cause we have no cap. I see that an see if we really wanted any these guys were one move from affording anyone.

Kyle Fuller, Riley Reiff, Carlos Dunlap

I kinda think FO is done in FA, just gonna wait for the draft and possibly see what's interesting after June cuts

Shoot. Reworking just Ebukam would be enough to get a FA well under the cap this year. We also have 9 draft picks but that starts at pick 61...super cheap draft class. Garoppolo or not, this off season is no different than the previous 5.

Nice way to look at it. I'm not disappointed with the way things are being handled with the current cap being what it is.

I just hope our oline stays healthy... add some quality depth via draft or maybe get lucky and find some (gems) after cuts

It's funny you see it that way. I would rather not restructure yet another contract to get another good FA addition not to mention a whole draft class which may require yet another restructure. Thinking ahead and not making possible bad contract decisions in the better path.

Do you think it's ok to pass up upgrades to the roster vs dumping Jimmy G and his 25 million cap hit? I think our insistence to get compensation for Jimmy G hurt our team this FA. We may of got Chandler Jones if Jimmy G was off the roster. Just to remind you we have a qb on a rookie contract which is so beneficial to winning a SB. That imo would put us a favorite in the NFC imo

Any of those would be great but there are still many other upgrades available in FA. I want to win a SB not just make a deep playoff run.

I saw that tweet, the original tweet about the cap room, wondering why I'm off from it, same with OTC's numbers.

I'm not really sure what the 49ers are doing. I guess some portion of the cap savings will "rollover" into the next year if we don't use it. Still, I think it is clear JG contract is hindering our ability to sign at least some FAs or resign a few of our guys.
It's not a case of not being able to sign some fre agents. I think they are trying to avoid getting into cap hell down the road. The Rams are willing to push everything down the road and sign high priced talent in their quest to win another SB. Eventually they will have to pay and will lose a lot of players. Neither way is the right way or the wrong way. It's just a business decision.

We've seen what happens when a team gets into cap hell. It happened after Carmine Policy kept pushing salaries downhill until they couldn't be pushed anymore. The 49ers fell into a deep hole that endured for a few years as they went thru coach after coach. It's hard to recover from that because once a team gets bad free agents don't want to come there anymore.
