I guess the pointless discussion has spilled over into this thread...
Well this thread is about Alex Smith's potential, so for those that are fans of his, check out the words from P.Tulini.

As far as today's practice, Alex Smith led the first-team offense. He continues to look sharp and confident as his throwing arm returns to full strength

I wrote a couple days ago that Alex Smith would clearly have to win the competition on the practice field to wrestle the starting QB job away from Shaun Hill. Based on the practice field, Smith does look to have the advantage. But I'm still assuming Smith will have to carry that over to the exhibition games before coach Mike Singletary would make the call to go with Smith over Hill.

Sounds like Smith is getting better!

This was the play of the day according to the Mercury News...

Play of the Day

During red-zone drills Josh Morgan slipped past Dre Bly on a corner route and Alex Smith found him with a pretty pass in the back of the end zone for a 20-yard score.

I really do not care what anyone says to put him down. To me, this is definitely encouraging to hear. For someone who hasn't played in nearly 2 years, in my opinion, Alex seems to be even better than he was before the injury. His mechanics are reportedly improved and his confindence also seems to be getting stronger with every practice. Hopefully, this is his oppertunity to redeem himself not only in the eyes of his teammates, but in the eyes of the 49ers fans!

Now this isnt anyone jumping the gun, no ones saying he will be our starter. But i just say in all fairness, we here good things about hill since the end of last season, and smith over the past few years since he's been injured. Finally he's showing some type of improvement. Maybe not enough to those, but thats ok. Point is, he is starting to show some of that "it" and the reason why he should be the starter.

Time will tell tho, and i just say it's nice that both Matts have something nice to say about the kid.

Alex Smith has the potential to be jobless, unmarried and broke in 4 years. As far as football goes,,, Smith has the potential to lose the number 3 job to Nate Davis. It would take so much luck and magic (winning the lottery type) for smith to be even marginally better than he ever was and even that is not starting QB material.

Smith could (potentially) be a 2nd string QB in the CFL - but he would be the worst number 2 as our northern bretheren tend to pass the ball a lot. Potentially Smith is a worse QB now than he was in college. At least in college "he" thought he could play and had a gimmicky system to lean on.
In closing Smith has the potential to ride a good team in 2009 to a new contract only to get injured late in the season or for all of 2010. Potentially Smith would again leave this team in disarray with no S.Hill and an under developed Nate Davis for the future.

Smith has the potential to cause further damage to this team.

Can we please stop with illogical talk of Smith being the 3rd stringer or being cut from the team.

Yeah man. That is pretty funny. Not all fans are smart or even have an IQ over 50.
You dont hear to many of the anti-Smith fans talk about his 2007 season, not that he played like a HOFer but to go from his rookie season to what he did in 07 showed he can play in this league. I am sorry to tell you guys but Smith will be here a few more years AT LEAST.
omg I love all of the dumb alex leaf posters. How stupid and so original. Ryan leaf couldnt even lace up Alex's cleats.
I have no doubts that if smith stays healthy he will be our starter!

bank on it haters!

I do like Hill too but imo smith is gonna blow him away in practice/camp

the plot thickens....
Im interested in seeing if Alex continues to look good this week, carrying over his positives from last week. Stay tuned!
The Qb competition is actually starting to look like a competition. Smith really seems to be making strides at practice.

its starting to look like the alex smith show, theyve been praising this guy a lot lately. i hope we finally get the guy we wanted in the draft a few years back. i think the reason for all his improvement is mental. he doesnt have nolan here to question his every move and with less money the expectations and pressure are way lower so he can just concentrate on football. i think alex will blow them away this year.

I agree with you. Like I said in another thread... For Alex, gaining back his mental confidence is the biggest obstacle that I believe he will have to overcome. By all reports so far, he appears to be on his way to doing that.
