Safety Room Post Draft

So, I wanted to take a deeper dive into each of the position groups now that we are on the other side of Free Agency, The Draft, and UDFA. There were a lot of very strong opinions about this latest draft class, so I thought it would be interesting to discuss where we stand and try to predict the future. I will start with the position group with arguably the weakest talent level: Safety Returning Players: Ji'ayir Brown Malik Mustapha Marques Sigle Derrick Canteen Siran Neal Commentary: Brown and Mustapha figure to get the first crack at starting. We all saw that Brown lacks the speed and reactions to be a solid starter. Mustapha provides some very entertaining hits, but his coverage skills are non-existent. To be fair, Mustapha was returning from knee surgery and seemed less agile than he did during his rookie year. Sigle also saw some time as a starter and actually impressed me at times. He has the speed and instincts to possible leapfrog either one of those starters, especially with a new DC. Neal seems to be on the roster purely for ST proficiency, so his roster spot is definitely weak. Canteen is a returning PS player who actually looked dynamic in preseason last year, so who knows? Rookies: Jalen Stroman Duce Chestnut Commentary: Neither of these guys move the needle much for me, but you never know. Stroman seems to be hard worker with speed issues, while Chestnut flashes at times, but has some size and instinct concerns. You never know, but neither of them seem like a threat to win a spot in a pretty weak group. Free Agents: Darrick Forrest Patrick McMorris Commentary: Both of these guys seem like Practice Squad hoppers hoping to catch lightning in a bottle. Could it happen? Sure. Is it likely, No. Overall Analysis: This group stinks. If we hope to see improvement in the safety play of last season, one or more of the following will have to happen: Raheem Morris implements a scheme that somehow masks our inefficiencies. I would think that would be to play a ton of man press with constant blitzing. Malik Mustapha shows huge coverage growth after allowing his knee to recover more or Sigle takes a huge step forward in year two. I think Brown is who he is as a player, but Mustapha and Sigle might be able to improve some. One of these camp bodies shoots out of the gate and grabs a starting spot. Stranger things have happened. Last, and most likely, we bring in a vet or two after teams start trimming rosters. I have to image there are a few safeties out there who can be better than what we have.

Agree that we need a big dawg vet in the room like the role Antoine Bethea played for us a few years back. Or even Gipson a couple years ago. Lets bring the wisdom back.

worst unit by far

I do like the improved front 7 though i think were back to one of the best in that unit again. We just have to ask our S to not blow it because i dont think there is any chance they will be differencemakers

What I'm worried about is hearing how Morris likes to blitz, can we trust Brown and Mustapha not to miss a tackle or get burned because that'll go to the house on blitz's

9ers always had decent Safeties. Even when the 9ers didn't win much they did. Hopefully they don't settle for what they have now and improve the room.

Thanks for this thread. It's definitely glaringly bad on paper. Like they can't be serious , lol. Definitely hoping for a vet the way we found Gipson those few years ago.

I have no problem giving Sigle another shot this year. I would much rather see him out there than Brown. Mustapha and Sigle are both projects that I believe deserve another shot being our safeties with hopefully an improved pass rush. If our pass rush continues to suck then our Safeties will continue to be a liability.
