unrelated but every now and then I just think about what a freak Aldon Smith was. Man he was fun to watch
For a season or two he was fun to watch. Once he got into his Alcohol issues, he was such a big headache and distraction for me. I dreaded any news after that, that mentioned in the headlines anything to do with Aldon. We've had some great legendary DE's in the 49ers history. He could have been in Canton with them, but he drank his destiny away.
Two of the best (Aldon and Haley) had issues that caused the Niners to move on from them.
It goes back to evaluating the intangibles as well as the tangibles. J.J. Watt and K.J. Wright were available after the Aldon Smith pick. Point being intangibles do matter, and while hindsight is 20/20 - a player with lesser physical athletic talent but greater intangibles may be the better choice in the long run.
I think CTE also may have exacerbated Aldon's and Haley's mental deteriorations, I dont know, I'm no doctor - but football is a violent sport and it takes a toll on a players body and mind every Sunday.
