Taking a safety in round 1 is one thing. Trading up the farm when we still have needs? I certainly hope it doesn't happen.

i think an elite S elevates the defense so much pretty much acts as an eraser. I know it wont be a popular choice in the sub and i would be in the minority but Caleb Downs is such a special player that offenses will have to circle and gameplan around. if we get an EDGE (and resign Trent) our two biggest needs are starting LG and a FS
Caleb Downs i think its one of the two blue chip prospects in the draft he might be the best S prospect ever and has potential to be one of the best S out of the gate .
For those unfamiliar with him

Seattle just got an elite S in the 3rd round. They need to draft the highest rated player on their board at #27 regardless of the position. They keep drafting for needs in the 1st round and it hasn't been great.

Caleb Downs is projected to go anywhere from #2 to #10, and I don't think he gets out the Top 10.
A realistic (though still very costly) trade package to get to No. 2 might look like this, drawing from historical precedents for big jumps (e.g., trades up to top-3 picks in recent years like the 2023 Bears-to-Panthers deal or others adjusted for value):
- The 49ers' 2026 first-round pick (No. 27)
- The 49ers' 2026 second-round pick (No. 58)
- The 49ers' 2027 first-round pick (projected to be mid-to-late)
- An additional 2026 third-round pick (if they have one via trade/comp; they currently lack their original but could acquire one) or a 2026 fourth-round compensatory pick
- Possibly another future asset like a 2027 second-rounder or player sweetener
overall, we don't have the Draft pick assets to Trade up that high. Technically we can, but it'll cost so much to make it happen. If he ends up dropping for whatever reason and it's the #8 or # 9 pick, then it becomes manageable, but I don't think he's on our radar like that. This team under Kyle & Lynch has been focused on building a solid D-Line. This team currently needs someone opposite of Bosa to rush the passer. I think his brother Joey will sign, but we still need one more after that even if he signs. So I wouldn't be surprised if we go D-Line again in the 1st round to solidify it.

Way way too much IMO, giving up 27, 58, say 139, and a 2027 1st + 2027 2nd is ridiculous for a safety IMO, we'd be depleted of 2026 and 2027 picks, left with basically a 1 & 3 4ths this year and 1 3rd, 1 4th, 1 5th, & 2 7ths in 2027, I just can't see them doing this, especially when we're not likely to get any comp picks in 2027, just way too much to give up.

I have no NFL employee draft experience but have always believed BAP is better than drafting for need.

Thats the point I was trying to make, it's not worth trading up that high to Draft Downs. As great as I think he'll be, trading up in the top 5 will just cost way too much. Now if he somehow is still available at #8 or #9 then it would be doable, but with how our Free Agency has been going. I'm content sticking with our picks and just going with the best overall player at each pick.

Man, if you read some idiot from ESPN Matt Miller's take on the off-season so far you would think it's even worse than last off-season. Like all they're trying to do is put Band-Aids on stuff instead of actually building the team for long-term success. Well part of doing that is plugging glaring holes on the roster like signing a Mike Evans or trading for Osa. They're trying to build an immediate SB contender while simultaneously building for the future, Miller you're an idiot.

I dont fully agree with his point, but in essence I dont think hes an idiot. They ARE signing a lot of bandaid player who are old with injury history who may just fall off the cliff.
The only young player they got was Osa who cost them a third and theyd have to pay him 20m a season (cap hit) to keep on him on the roster past this season
So his premise makes sense if one thinks this team has to rebuild and get younger pronto, right here right now. This would mean not signing older guys on short term deals, but rather get some young and miscast players from other teams, and the main thing is to have lots of draft picks and draft well getting the most coveted commodity in the NFL - cheap, young, good players.

I'm perfectly fine with how the offseason has went so far. Do i agree with every move? No but if you're honest with yourself no one would agree with everything a GM does or does not do. Only thing i wished we would do is find a starting caliber guard in free agency. We did get some depth and maybe we will still sign someone else but so far this puts us in the position of drafting for a major need which isn't the best idea.
As far as Matt Miller's comments, the purpose of the offseason is to get better. Everything else is secondary. Getting younger and faster sounds great but if it comes with the expense of getting worse then no thanks we aren't in a rebuild stage we are in a win now stage.
Look at the players we lost and compare them to the players we gained
J Jennings < Mike Evans
K Davis & J Elliot < Osa Odighizuwa
K Bourne < Christian Kirk (I say this cause Purdy never developed a chemistry with Bourne. His big #s came from Mac Jones)
E Kendricks < D Greenlaw
The rest of the guys we lost and signed are replacement level guys who all wash out at the end.

The way I see it is that this is the last gasp back against the wall take advantage of the window for KS/JL
(I an not implying they would be let go)
I am implying that they know damn well this is the last season that Trent, CMC, Kittle, Warner, Bosa etc will be on the team together.
After this season people will retire, age out, contracts balloon etc.
So why not stock up on veterans, try to hit the draft and make one final window run?
Next year is going to be a rebuild/reset no matter how you look at it.

Personally I don't like giving up multiple high picks for any position other than QB. Offenses can avoid certain defenders by calling plays that neutralize them. WA lot of ther best position players ar eon teams that never see the plaoffs because they overvalue CB or edge rushers. Meanwhile the teams in the SB often have the best interior line talent on offense and defense. You don't need the best QB or the best WR as long as your line play is solid.
