bad?

wtf lol

He has been bad so far the main thing we need him to do is hold the middle down and he's either too slow to get to the running back after disengaging or gets blown up the majority of the time. Once we face a juggernaut OL in the playoffs it can be a real problem if he doesn't figure it out.
i think you are still thinking of the first game.. because that did not happen during 1v1.. but NOLA made it a point to double team Collins a lot

Hmm… I wonder why?

Because he has been terrible 😂 I'm not saying the dudes a bust already either but I'm not over here with rose glasses "wow he's making massive improvements against the saints!" either. Hope he fixes his run defense come playoffs, I don't even care about his pass rush right now teams like the Lions, Bucs, Eagles, Packers, even the Vikings I can see running it right down our throat with how our DTs have played specifically him

Honestly what are you talking about? His snaps increased from week 1 and it's not because he was terrible.

What's funny is Hero posted clips of Collins playing faster, beating his guys and making an impact even if it's a hair away from the play. You respond with he's too slow and getting ran up the middle on.

Where in that clip was he running up the middle cuz of Collins? It looked like Kamara got maybe 4 yards MAX on those plays...where is this running up the middle talk? Collins holds up his blocks, plugs up the gap and tries to get in on the action once Kamara bounces away from those gaps. Several plays were minor gains and he was a tick away from forcing a fumble on the pass play in there.

There may have been other plays not in that clip where he didn't play well but your response to those clips show you're either biased and unwilling to have a legit discussion about the kid or your eyes are having a problem.
Check out this play. The Saints dial up inside zone/split zone, which has been the wide 9's kryptonite(along with duo) the last few years due to the 49ers' previous 3tech and 2i IDL being unable to hold up to the two double-team blocks. Alfred fires off the ball, does a nice job staying square to the LOS, knocks back the guard and literally throws him into the RB's intended running lane, which forces him to look for another lane. The trail block from the right tackle doesn't even budge Alfred. Not sure how this play ends up without Alfred because whoever was next to him(Elliott?) was being blocked to Africa. Also, you really have to love the 330-pound big man running to the ball to finish the play.

One thing Collins needs to work on, like many other rookies, is playing with more control. This is one of the reasons Mykel is so impressive so far in my eyes. The kid is only 21 yet doesn't appear frenetic or spazzing to exert power. Everything is smooth, effortless and in control.

I'm hoping that after the first 10 weeks - this guy is comfortable and executing his role at a much faster pace. It's understandable for him to be a tick slow right now cause he's learning and getting experience. after 10 games, he should feel a lot more comfortable and have a routine down for the week.

My hope is that the final 7 weeks of the season, all our rookies etc are a well oiled machine and playing fast and hard. executing their roles at a high level. if we can do that, we can make some serious noise in the playoffs.

Agreed! So many question marks coming in to the season, but if this easy schedule allows us to win games while the rookies start to figure things out and the offense can get healthy, we could be competitive come playoff time.

Collins getting destroyed :)

I agree he definitely is playing a little beyond his control. If you look at games from UT last year he was so read/react trained he was mostly JUST trying to occupy and oppose the OL. Now he's getting the message that he needs to control the line AND be agressive ... he's still making mistakes, he reaches, moves the wrong way, misses steps, has bad footwork ... but it's WAY less in week 2 than week 1. And while in limited snaps in week 1 he looked completely lost, in many more snaps in week 2 he was playing the scheme and moving faster.

Another factor with Collins is that ballooning up to near 370lbs then dropping 40ish pounds is NOT the way to develop muscle mass, and is a good way to ruin quick twitch muscle mass. I expect him to not struggle every year like some have in the past ... he's a really smart and driven guy ... but he is going to suffer to some extent all year because of that mistake.
I think he's still on a catch up mode since he didn't actually have a normal off season participation but he seems to be a good kid with lots of potential. I think with more and more reps, he'll be a significant asset for us.

Bingo! Every play on defense my eyes were on Collins then switched to Mykel if it was a pass. He wasn't that good did have a couple of flashes but was still consistently getting ran on. I'm not going to jump up and down and say WOW what an improvement! On a 25 sec clip with half the plays not being that impressive against one of the worst teams in the nfl 😂
lol

One thing I love here is the IQ.

Look how he runs to angle his support tackle to push the runner BACK.

Often times stupid players will fly into the offensive player's back, negating his teammates' gang tackle and helping push the offensive guy forward.

Collins doesn't do that. That's smart football. Wouldn't be surprised if Saleh teaches that too.

Wrong.

Well Kamara had a 100 yards rushing averaging 4.7 and it looked like the majority of the time they were pounding it inside. What did you see?
