(I'm obviously not an expert)

IMO (and that's all it is) he's playing high, lack of explosiveness and scheme fit….still super early and I don't think anyone should expect anything as a rusher this yr, which is my point. We don't have a legit pass rushing DT.

I think this goes along with the it's too early to know whether we have a real problem or not.

On top of Collins being an unfinished and delayed product as a rookie we don't know what they're going to scheme up.

Overall I think the majority of the pass rushing DTs in the NFL these days are smaller more big DE types and most of the top pass rushing DTs from last year were guys who took a year or two to break out.

It's possible the team is going to play more blitz heavy so the ask from the DTs is simply take up space, occupy blockers or play the run well and ensure we're in 3rd and long situations often where Mykel can move inside…tho another DT who can rush consistently would be great. Hope West/Collins can get there or see if Kalia Davis can step up and stay healthy.
I seriously question using the 43rd pick for that purpose if that's the case.

That's a valid point but their thought process could be seeing a guy who could develop into a dominant overall DT. The plan for him as a rookie may not be what they envision for him year 2+.

But I'm sure we can all agree given where he was drafted and the expectations…he's the most disappointing guy in the draft class right now.

All I can say is hopefully we don't feel that way 5 years from now.

Not that I hope Collins is the DT equivalent to this but let's not forget Aaron Banks didn't even start as a rookie(wasn't even active for a few games iirc) and he ended up being a pretty good starter for us.

Anderson has occasional good pass rush snaps last year, much like West did last year ... I wouldn't call any of the three pass rushing DTs, but if they are super forceful for snap after snap they should win more often late in games.

And I agree, I think we should reasonably expect them to get better as the season goes even though their growth should really take a big step forward next off-season (and that's okay).

Not even talking about his ceiling. Concerning that his floor is so low. I guess he got too used winning with brute force and no technique in college. That's happening in the NFL, as evidenced by him being thrown back into the safeties lap. Again, too many parallels with Kinlaw. Holding out as a second rd pick also screwed him on leeway to perform sooner than later.

If that's the case why the hell are you using the 43rd overall pick on Collins? Depending on blitzing all the time because you neglected actual interior pass rushers is a horrible game plan.

Shouldn't be using a top 43 pick on a guy like that then.

they already had a starter at LG Banks rookie yr, we weren't dependent on him having to come in day 1. We don't have a legit starting DT (especially one that can rush the passer) currently.

imo this team has one of the worst day 1 IDL group in football. Yes we spent draft capital BUT it's all projection. Kevin Givens was our most productive DT and he's hurt (and shouldn't be a starter anyway). We will see but man we're acting a lot of rookie DTs and don't have s**t for real vets
Im hoping they bring in some vets via trade before cut down day.

Assuming they keep 4 IDL and 5DE which 2 are you cutting to bring in a cast off from another team? Collins, West, Anderson, Valdez, and Davis

Anderson still needs a lot of work, but he was also the 49ers best IDL at times last year and is in better shape this year.
Davis has been injured a lot.
Valdez may be at his ceiling already.

That said, Davis has shown potential and is the veteran of this group (ugh), Valdez won't make it to the PS and it would suck to not find out his potential.

Pushing one or two on to IR is possible any year, but I don't think they want to do that.

I think the 49ers will be watching cut down day very closely, but I wouldn't expect IDL to be a place they jump.

If you're going to hold out like a top 5 pick, you better show up and play like one.

Been thinking that since the holdout. M-Fer better show something. If I'm the Niners, I'm reminding him of that bs

He didn't hold out though? He signed his contract before TC officially started. He missed OTAs due to a prior injury, nothing related to his contract.

Also it should be mentioned that every 2nd round pick except 2 had a delay in signing, so it isn't like Alfred Collins was unique in that regard.
He just looks so raw.

When did he hold out?? He was injured and couldn't participate in minicamps
