I laugh when I read these early fan opinions on our draft picks. After the draft so many say we didn't draft well and should have taken this guy or that guy. Then workouts start and they expect every player to look great. When they struggle early they immediately start calling them a bust. Amazing how quickly fans can change thier mind.

Who's saying we didn't draft well? Seems like everyone is overzealous about this draft class

He was definitely drafted for need, Josh Simmons, Jihaad Campbell and Will Johnson who I was hoping for all fell in striking distance. They are all killing it in camp and went to rivals Chiefs, Eagles, CardinalsThis guy is just really big and that's about it
It's pointless playing the what if game so early in their careers.
Even more so playing the what if game for guys who clearly were too high/risky to draft at 11 but weren't there at 43. Will Johnson is the only guy who we had a chance to grab instead of Collins. I do think the clear need at DT forced our hand on that pick with the DT run that happened earlier. I know had we taken Johnson it would've been an absolute slam dunk pick IMO.
Having said that I hope in a few years Collins is a major contributor for us at an all pro level and Johnson's injury concerns prove to have been valid(and that's not me rooting for injuries, just simply don't want to see a division rival get a top 10 corner for peanuts)
I mean Collins could end up a great plug run defender which I'm down with spending a high 2nd if thats the case. I'm not a BPA or draft strictly for need kind of guy. There's got to be balance between the two, this pick reeks of drafting for need.
Didn't know Johnson had injury concerns all I see is he had turf toe, nothing significant. I can understand Josh Simmons being a injury concern. Johnson wasn't the only chance either both Simmons and Campbell were in striking distance.

It's like the "Gameday" threads - so many fans live on an emotional roller coaster on a play to play basis.
*Not good play happens* - WE SUCK! We should tank for the 1 pick and find who we can get to replace Kyle.
*good play happens* - hell yeah! We are amazing and Kyle is a genius. No one can beat us.
lol it's just this over and over again, it's wild. It's not everyone but it's enough people to where it dominates the thread IMO.

He looked pretty bad even against backups. Looks like he has a low motor saw him get pushed back like 5 yards on an inside run

He looked slow and fat. But a huge gap plugger will look like that sometimes. His job is to occupy blockers. So he can be doing that in a way and still look slow and fat and not always get there. His role won't always get to the ball. That's not what he does. Not even his intended purpose.

He's still in OTA form while everyone else is a bit ahead... should be fine for his expected (primary) duty PLUG HOES

I would rather he defend the run.

I hope he can get better fast because he isn't ready to play meaningful snaps right now

Him getting pushed back in the run game with high pad level really reminded me of Kinlaw...I can't shake that feeling even though I have asked myself to not bring up that comparison. At the very least this guy is going to be a project, I felt like his motor was actually good on game tape, but I dont know if its enough to overcome the lack of plan or mediocre (at least in this game) ability to hold ground against double blocks

Denver had their starters on the OL in for 3 drives. By the time they brought out their cut level players Collins was no longer out there(though I'd have to go and and check)
Obviously not the showing from the DL we wanted to see but given the competition it's not exactly the end of the world either.
Can he learn from the mistakes and build on it? That's the question.

I actually think he was playing vs their starters (not 100% sure though) regardless his pad level was awful and overall wasn't very impressive for a 6-5 330lb DT with vines for arms, that's suppose to be stepping in right off the bat and handling dudes vs the run.
hopefully he can improve there at the very least because he's not suppose to be getting pushed around like that. I can't expect anything from him vs the pass
